I'd say the price was okay... HEck, If ya sold JUST that SHerman on Ebay, you'd get at least $500 for it, as I've seen the Sherman step-downs and step-ups command that price!

Sound like a good project tractor to me.

Allen..... ....one should never buy anything sight unseen, but based upon your description if accurate, and if'n I was lookin' fer an 8N, I'd buy your self-described non-runnin' 52 8N for $1500, probably start the dickerin' at $1000. A good runnin' 8N worth about $2500.

OEM quality replacement grill $250, el-cheapo don't fit quite rite grill $75.

Theres a number of reasons why yer 8N won't start, but you admit to "oil in water". I'm gonna assume you're refering to a floating oil sheen onnna top the radiator water. This is generally combustion by-products forcing themselves past old leaky headgasket. Take a compression check, 5 puffs min, Ford specs: 90 psi min. New headgasket $20, torque headbolts 70 ft/lbs.

Whole lotta thing to check for a non-starter..... like got sparkies? good gas flow? Check by pullin plug innna bottom of gravity fed carb, should flow likka ol'man pee. Check fer watter innna gas, I once drained over 3 qts outta mine. Then theres desperation, squirt of ether quickstarter, 12 volt jump onnna starter BOLT.

N's can be tricky to start when yer not familiar with them. 6 volts sounds so slow. Gas valve under tank 2-turns, 1/3 throttle, ignition switch on, tranny in neutral, crank'er, pull springback choke, should start innna bout 3-rumps. At least mine does..... ...Dell

Northern Ag Network just reported that the national stock dog trials are going to be in Sturgis, S.D. this year. Since the short way there from Washington is out I-90 and since I am right near that route in Manhattan, Montana plan on at least stopping for a beer.

BJ..... ....thanks for heads-up and offer. I went to one Nat'l stockdog (sheepdog) trial down Medford Ore way. Buncha hyper Border Collies (grin). I prefer my more relaxed Australian Shepherds. Love to watch any good stockdog, no matter what the breed..... ....Dell

Whatever suits you just plumb tickles me--Henry Fonda in the Rounders.

If Sturgis fits your schedule let us know and we will at least meet somewhere for lunch. Another board member--John Howell--lives near by and maybe we can put together something that fits your schedule. If you plan to do the black hills motorcycle rally to prospect that country we always have somebody running through about that time too.

Give me you address and I'll buy it for what you gave for it.
You could part it out and easily get back what you paid. The Sherman alone will get you half way there. I suspect that it is a 3 speed Sherman. Try finding the neutral position (about half way between "lo" and "high") then pull outward on the handle and then back. If it does, that is "standard" range. The ratios are the same as if the Sherman was not there.
Unless you have a broken block and a trashed trans and rear-end, $1500 is a fairly safe investment. HTH
