OK, So what's Ford gonna do for it's Centenial? It gave us the Jubilee in it's jubilee year of 1953 (ah I remember it well, GOD I'm gettin old)
I was hoping that they would surprise us with a new product line or something. I'd love to see an update of the venerable old Tri-motor. Bill Stout tried in in 1958, but only one or two "One More Tri's" were actually built. Or an update of the 32 roadster like Chrysler's Prowler. A 1940 coupe remake would put some nice familiar old silhouettes back on the highways. Or the 55 T-Bird 2 seater. To me, no car, before or since has ever looked quite that good. From what I see, Ford couldn't care less about this event. Any suggestions? Regards, Rich

Ford is introducing a brand new design ford 150 pickup in June. They plan on producing the current design and the new one for about a year. Your choice. They showed it off at the Cowboy game last week. Never owned a Dodge...couldn't afford the loss the day you drive it out...Jimbo TX

Hi Rich-
To answer your question, go to Marv Baumann's web page and click on the left column under 2003 Shows. Marv is personally very busy these days organizing the 100th Anniversary Show at Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan slated in August. He told me that if you display your tractor/vehicle, you get free passes for you and your family for both days. I am bringing my '48 8N and Dearborn Plow to show there. I can't believe how far off the topic the responses got to your question...Explorers, Chryslers, GM's, SUV's, anyway, try this---

I have not heard "official" information about a Ford Centennial Celebration but I think the Henry Ford Museum is doing something and the Pagent of Power, in August, is also.
Southeast Michigan Antique Tractor & Engine Assoc. is featuring Ford tractors at our 14 annual
show, July 18-20, 2003. We are trying to borrow a display from the museum for our show. The details may be in the money. How do you insure a one of a kind tractor, the N prototype, built prior to 9N production?

It's a shame they left the back tires go bad on the 9N prototype, that will make it hard to move and display somewhere else.

Hey Barnstormer,

Where is the location of the tractor show, in MIch?

Call your homeowner's insurance agent and ask him (her) that question> They might refer you to a "speciality-insurance CO. in the state" Generally the marketing term for the co. will be:
A FLOATER. We do this all the time for air shows. We eaven can git insurance the show in case of inclimate weather, and the show is cancelled!!!!

Hope this helps.

John, thanks for the insurance info. I have two agents looking.
Our show is in Monroe County, Mich., at Nike Park. The park was once part of a missle base, hence the name. Take I-75 north out of Toledo to exit 21, Newport Road, then 2 1/2 miles west to the park. We hope to see maNy N'ers there.

I have not heard of anything either, That kinda scares me. My Daughter and grandson are holding some Ford stock. I can't see an automotive Icon like Ford ignoring it's 100th birthday. However, I understand that the latest Ford descendant, William Ford (IIRC) is the kind who hates SUVs. Thinks the Explorer should be terminated. He propabaly thinks that all the world's problems began with Great Grampa's Model T. And only got worse with the N tractors. I've developed an intense dislike for guys like that.
BTW, I think SUVs are stupid and wasteful ,but I would'nt stop making them. I figure that every time some bimbo who mistakes her SUV for an Abrams Battle tank and tries unsuccessfully to drive it over a 100year old oak tree, Then there's one less bimbo and one less SUV. OK by me ! They are too small to be a truck and too big to be a car.
It's an autmotive crossdresser, all confused about what it really is. Regards, Rich

Just to balance this out a bit,I worked for a couple of GM garages, but my family was Ford oriented. I have owned and driven all of the big three, and all of the Fords I have chosen to buy have been great vehicles, the best being an "88 Ranger I put 128K on with extensive towing. I would still have it if not for buying a larger travel trailer. As far as what I'm doing for the 100th aniversary, I'm taking my 50 year old C750 with 56 year old Fruehauf van trailer behind it to the worlds largest antique truck show in Syracuse NY May 23 & 24th 2003. I hope to have in the trailer an 8NV8 that is my winter project.

Maybe they'll sell out to Chrysler for the 100th and start making real cars! I think the 8N, 2N and 9N are great machines - but they are an entirely different animal than Ford's regular fare, I am no Ford fan. Any of the old Ford cars and trucks I've had the misfortune to buy have been pure junk in comparison the other big two american automakers. Fix Or Repair Daily, Found on Road Dead are typical and apt descriptions of Ford's passenger line. How about for a 100th anniversery present they exchange vehicles with all those families with Explorers?

I have driven Fords (first on race day) most of life with the exception of a 55 chevy.(GM quit building real cars 2 years later). We even had a Fairmont wagon that had over 300000 miles on it when we traded it for an 86 Taurus that had 275000 miles when we gave it to our son.He is still driving with original eng. This Chevrolet/Geo/toyota/Prism my wife bought last year (against my wishes) will never see these numbers. Even the Chevy dealer called it a throwaway car. Never owned a Chrysler product(leaves more for you I guess). I have read a lot of research concerning the true story of how Daimler courted, aquired, then treated poorly (putting it mildly) their American "partners" and stockholders. I'm old enough to remember what Damiler Benz was building back in the early '40s and I know what Ford was doing then too. You can forget if you want too but I can't. Just my two cents worth.

if you're referring to Benz' largest customer being the German War Machine, I have to quietly agree. My wife's grandfather still wears scars from the mitsubishi delivered machine gun fire he recieved 7 Dec 1941 while on deck of the USS Nevada BB36. My F150 has the mazdoo tranny with the most ignorant slave cylinder I have ever seen...it's concentric around the input shaft AAARRRRGGGHHH! My 1954 ford tudor sedan has 195K and gets 26 mpg on the hiway, my 1961 F100 is leaving soon hopefully, and the 41 9N is here to stay. period. (unless my wife decides otherwise)

have a great day

Here's my 2 cents worth-
I own a 93 F-250 w/460 standard in it, it has over 300,000 miles on it and most was pulling a 10,000 lb trailer behind it (mostly mtn driving), all I have had to do was replace clutch (son learning to drive) and a head gasket (overheated it once). It has been a great truck. I did change it over to full synthetic oil when I first got it and I know thats why I have gotten so many miles on it

Nothing wrong with an Explorer that any driver with reasonable skills would have a problem with. This includes maintaining a reasonable tire pressure.

I bought a new Explorer sport trac back in Sept. I have had lots of vehicles, but this is the handiest and most versatile I have had yet. The only negative is the gas milage which is between 17 and 18 in the city. Haven't really had it out on the road yet. I have almost 4,000 miles on it, and am waiting for the milage to improve. Doubtful that it will. But I love the vehicle otherwise. Steve

I was gonna stay out of this, But here goes anyway. (what kind of an Irishman can stay out of a "Discussion" anyway?) I haven't owned them all, But I've owned a lot of the products of the Big three and many lesser manufacturers. My last few trucks have all been Fords, Currently I have a 99 van, Before that it was an 88 E150 that I bought new. The only thing wrong with it was the Mazda 5 spd tranmission. Another instrument of rage over Hiroshima, I'm sure. Other than that jap tranny, it was fine. I drove it all over with various loads for 13 years. The Chevy guys I know are all switching quietly to Fords because the chevs were giving them some bad times with things like Heads on a V8? Brake pads that wouldn't last more than 10-12 thousand miles. Tranny problems. My experiences with Chrysler have left bad tastes in my mouth.I really can't see myself owning another one. Who knows, I try to keep an open mind. I currently drive Saabs. I've got an 89 9000, and I just picked up a 95 9000. I wish it were made in America. Once you get used to a Saab 9000, nothing else seems quite like a real car again. In my life I've owned a Jag, a couple of Triumphs. A couple of Buicks, large Fords, Chevies, In my job, I drove several Dodge Aries. A Plymouth duster (Great car) a couple of Nissans, and two Saab 900s. Then I discovered the 9000. God! I love that car. I picked it up at 85 K miles and now I'm at 160+k still going very strong. Passes NJ's new emmission tests like a breeze. I just got one for my wife at 65K miles. Shes having problems holding it down to 80mph. With a turbo, it flys and still gets 28Mpg. I put slightly larger tires on my 89 and we took it up the NY Thruway at 70 MPH. I put the gas in, and drove it off, then I filled it again, did the math and I was getting a true 31 MPG. Ok by me in a 200+ HP engine. That car is as much fun to drive now after 80K and 8 years as it was when I first bought it. Too bad the last 9000 was made in 1999. Now that GM owns Saab, it'll probably have parts that interchange with Pontiacs or something stupid like that. Regards, Rich

re:"Now that GM owns Saab, it'll probably have parts that interchange with Pontiacs or something stupid like that."

Rich, I recommend subscribing to some of the insider trade mags on the auto industry (they're freebies.) It's a real interesting look at the way cars are made today out of off-the-shelf components, just like PCs, toasters, and everything else these days.

The big transition over the last 20 years, to me, has been the growth of the ODM component percentage of -ALL- makes of cars. Engineers at the auto companies push paper and merely approve different component vendors, rather than design their own "better idea." Fords and Chevies use all sorts of interchangeable components, from fasteners/connectors to alternators and sensors.

The Ford vs. Chevy vs. foreign just don't mean as much as it used to.

Whether you have a bias or not, these type mags are WAY more interesting than the fluff "Motor Trends" and C&D crap.

Jeff, Thanks for the link, I went to it and you're right. It's like one big parts dept and everybody goes there and draws what they need. Reminds me of the old story about the time after the war when GM's foundries went on strike and they had to have Ford do their castings for the Chevy blocks. I like Saabs because they were so individualistic. There ain't nothing like a Saab. The only car I know of that drives thru a chain. No problems with it either. Check out the high mileage records at Saabnet.com. There was one that passed 761,000 miles. Several that passed 500,000 miles, Many over 400,000.many many over 300,000. Not only is it a rugged little beastie, but I really enjoy driving it. Nothing like it in ice and snow. Holds the road like glue(at 80mph)
Saab Engineers think differently than GM's or Ford's. They don't solve problems the way that Americans do. Anyone who's ever seen a Swedish Ljungman rifle will understand what I'm talking about. I'd hate to see that change. Regards, Rich

I'm glad you are happy with the Saabs, if you weren't it might sound like a "saab" story. (weak humor huh?), They are about as individualistic as you can find. I always wanted to try a Citroen but never got around to finding one and don't like the looks of the new ones. Come to think of it I don't like the looks of any of the newer stuff. Guess i have crossed over into "old age". I'm sorry, that was supposed to be "senior citizen", don't want to be politically incorrect. My wife btw has decided she wants an older karmen gia. Another one of those lapses into our youth I guess. We will probably stay with mostly fords for now though. FOMOCO paid our wages all these years so that means somthing.
