Is it possible to run a 1 wire alternator on an 8n following a 12 volt conversion? If so, could anyone assist me with a diagram for it? Thanks Sam

It is my understanding, from a previous post that the alternator, on a one wire system has to be going 1800 rpm's before it will charge. However with the smaller pulley on the generator and the larger one on the tractor, the tractor would surely only need to be turning about half that. I bought a 1948 8N, with the one wire alternator, and tried Zane's method of using push button wired to the #1 terminal on the alternator. After starting you push the button and the alternator starts charging immediately, without revving the engine. Prior to buying the 1948 8N I wired a B JD with an alternator that required an external voltage regulator. I had no instructions, so I traced the wiring on an IHC pickup, and wired the JD by using the IHC as a guide. I later wired a 1950 8N Sidemount distributor with a Delco 3 wire alternator and had no diagram to follow, so I used my IHC repair manual to find the wiring routing. I have had no formal training in mechanics or electrical work, but didn't feel it was that complicated. Both the JD and 1950 8N work perfectly.

I converted my 1948 8N to a 12v system a while back and encountered the same dilemma of a 1 wire alternator. I discovered that I must rev the engine's RPMs up to get the charging to begin. It's not a big deal once you get the hang of it.

I just purchased a 1-wire alt. that starts charging at 1200 rpm. Its output is 30 amps but could be increased if desired. Eubanks Auto. Electric in Dekalb,Texas can fix you up for 69.95. Good luck, David

Sam..... ....hook the 1-wire 12 volt alternators output to any convient battery connection, most use the starter solenoid battery stud. But there is more to it than that, and you should know ALL the consequences.

BE AWARE OF differences between the square OEM 6 volt frontmount ignition coil that absolutely requires the use of the "infamous ballast resistor" mounted on backside of dashpanel and the more conventional roundcan coil sidemount distributor ignition system.

I'm not a "fan" of the deceptively simple Delco 10-SI 1-wire alternator conversion BECAUSE ya haffta jazz that cold engine at start-up to over 1800 rpms for the 1-wire alternator to started generating 12 volts.

I much prefer the 3-wire scheme Delco 10-SI with external excitation like GM does it with an idiot light, BECAUSE it starts charging at about 500 rpms. Remember, your N-Engine is supposta idle at 400 rpms and has a max 2200 rpms.

And before you convert to 12 volts, you really need to search the N-Board archives and read about all the 12 volt conversion problems before its too late. Most 12 volt conversion problems are the result of the "electrically challenged" attempting to out-engineer the electrically knowledgeable that have done it successfully. You'll also find all kinds of "links" to ennny 12 volt conversion you want.

I'm a 12 volt advocate for the right reasons. That said, I haven't found the right reason to convert my eazy starting OEM 6 volt 52 8N to 12 volts. And I know HOW to do it the right way. Remember the 6 volt mantra: "keep'em clean, bright, and tight"..... ...respectfully, Dell
