O.K. I need some suggestions.
My 48 8N (Front Dist) won't even fire anymore. Last summer I replaced the coil condenser, cap, resistor, plugs and ignition switch. I also cleaned and rebuilt the carb. It started pretty well all summer and fall, but once it got cold it would only fire once and kick out the starter. I had gas leaking out of the carb ever since I rebuilt it, but since it was starting and running O.K. I let it go 'til now. I replaced he float and the plugs (they were gross) and charged up the battery. Won't even fire even with some starting fluid. I do have good spark at all plugs. I have it on the battery charger tonite and I'm going to try jumping out the resistor tomorrow. Any other suggestions? I need some help here guys!!!

You know, my 8N ran like, you know. would not start right as soon as the cold set in. absolutely the first thing I will do next time assuming it was fine when the temperature was hot, is to just pull the oil can off the bottom of the air cleaner assy. Assuming the cold oil is making the tractor breath through a straw rather than a pipe. I am actually considering a dry filter for the winter cold months as that dust is lower and then just connect the origonal for the summer months. How about this thought?
Best regards

sounds like the same problems ive been having with my 48n. I changed the oil in my air cleaner cause it was too thick to let air through, then i noticed intake was sucking air,so i gave it a little shot of wd40 right at the gasket and it fired up.When i get a warmer day im going to replace intake gskt, hope this helps ,,,Tim

Did you geve it a blast of either?
You said you had spark, Fuel? compression?
When I first got my 41 9n it had been sittin a while and had a stuck lifter hence no compression.
check compression in each cylinder,a place to start-excuse the pun

Check your compression, or pull the valve inspection plates.
I bet dollars to doughnuts that your exhaust valves are stuck 'up'.

This may sound strange, but I have had lots of problems when I work on peoples tractors, but pull start it. I have had tractors that would start after everthing I have tried. I could always get them going by pull starting them. Maybe you can figure it out once she is running. Good luck. Always remember, three things that get engines going is spark, fuel and timing. Generaly as a rule on the ford tractors if your within the ball park timing on these doesn't make much difference. Check your float for sticking, but if you have done the rebuild, it is probably just flooding. It is real commom for these to do. Pull that baby, it will start. Use third gear, the wheels will probably just lockup in 1st.

Bypassing the resistor (temporarily) is only a quick fix to get more volts to the coil. If you have good spark at the plugs, it will not help and may lead to damage. That being said, I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help. Why not try everything at once. New plugs, shot of ether, jumping directly to the starter with a 12 volt and letting the tractor's 6 volt deliver all it can to the sparkies. Don't hook 12 volt to a 6 volt battery.
