Can I swap engines?

Guys,

Can you swap engines between a 1948 model 8N and a 1951 model 8N without any modifications? The 48 model is in great shape but the engine smokes and is getting progressively worse (burns 2qts of 40W an hour). The 51 model has an engine that runs good, no smoke, good compression but the rest of the tractor will take some work starting with the transmission that has 2nd gear busted in it.

For now, to save the overhaul costs on the 48 model, can I put the 51 model engine on the 48?

Richie

Thanks for the responses. This will work as a temporary measure until the new house (and shop) is completed and I have the time and room to strip the rest of the 51 down and do it right.

These tractors are too valuable to allow to sit around. Time better spent fixing them up than exchanging engines. Only exception should be if cash is short right now.

There's a full transmission set on Ebay right now. Could come in handy later.

Should be pretty straight forward. Bolt up is the same, minor differences between the front mount distributor and side mount. But, you have all the parts and brackets for both so matching up parts to make one work should be easy.
