Ralph,
I just finished rebuilding my 9N a couple months ago and had a very similiar problem. You didn't say if you replaced the coil, but that was my problem. I was ready to set my tractor on fire since I did everything you've done and it didn't help. I could replace the plugs and it would run good for a short time then start missing pretty bad. Along with that, it was hard to start. I ended up re-wiring mine the way it's suppossed to be with a new resistor, putting the new coil on, and now it runs perfect and starts right up. Even when it's 0 degree's out.

Hope this helps, Al

I'll bet it's electrical too; might not be too serious, let's hope: like a bad plug wire or plug, or even...perish the thought...mis-wiring cylinders 2 and 3. I've done that myself; if you can get the tractor to start, it runs on 1 and 4, tho not well, 2 and 3 are still firing but not at the compression stroke so not effective at all. May shoot fire out of the carb throat. Interesting dynamics.

No way to get the distributor out of time a tooth if you have a front mount as a 9N should have. Could have the cam out of time with the crank. I would think the engine would run just one tooth out either way. You have a steady miss, an intermittant miss, does it vary with engine speed? Can you trace it to one cylinder?

I agree. If it's a front mount distributor, it can only go in one way. I think off hand that it is in the electrical. When it is missing, pull off one plug wire at a time an see if you can determine which one doesn't affect the engine, that will be the one missing. If none responds, then you have an intermittent miss not associated with any one cylinder, in which case I would look to a short, or loose rotor, or bad cap or ????? ?? at the distributor. In addition to what was suggested already, check the valve lash...a too tight lash will cause a "miss" if the valve doesn't seat all the way. The experience I have had with V-8's is that an improperly timed cam won't cause a miss, but you will either have an engine with no power or a lot of backfiring, which doesn't seem to fit your problem. My $.02
