I am currently doing some engine work on a 9N for a friend. He wants me to look at the 3 pt. He said it "vibrates" and will not pick up more than 150#s. I've never been into one of these but I assume there is a piston pump in there which is creating the "vibration" through its pumping action. Is there a specific valve or mechanism to blame? Where do I start?

Before you tear anything apart, make sure you HAVE fluid, and enough of it!! Bob in NY

What you need is to install a ZANE LIVE THANG on the tractor along with a ZANE THANG position control.

I bought an 8N last summer that the lift didn't work on so I took the pump out to see whatsamatta.

The Scottish yoke and the brass bushings etc were all in a heap in the middle of the bottom of the pump.

I studied this problem for a few minutes knowing that it was going to cost me big bucks to fix that broke pump. The valves in the side chambers were all OK.

I installed one of my ZANE LIVE THANG live hydraulic units on the tractor and the lift worked like a charm. No guts whatsoever in the pump.

Believe it or don't

I purchased a '44 2N several years back. The tractor had not be used much for about six years. There were numerous hydraulic leaks. Rather than troubleshoot, I elected (from several posts here) to drain the hydraulic fluid completely. The previous owner was using FNH 134D and had leaks and the lift would only go half-way. I drained the compartments "several" times; then, I used 80W/90 GL-5 oil. The leaks quit almost completely and the lift works well - lifts the 5' brush hog without problem.

The type of oil may not be the problem; but, worth investigating. Hope this can be of help. Take care.

Rich..... .....gack.....a hydraulic newbie without an I&T FO-4 manual, not propitious.

The PTO shaft driven 2-piston "scotch-yoke" hydraulic pump pumps about 2.85 gpm @ 1750 psi at 2000 rpm.

The lack of hydraulic lift ability and jerks is usually because of "leaks". Remove the 6" round dipstick plate and lookup inside for leaks while operating. 2 places for leaks, the hydraulic piston or the hydraulic feedthru standpipe gasket area. It'll be obvious where it is leaking..... ....Dell

I think it may be a vane pump, unless it has been replaced.

Could be real leaky seals around the hyd cylinder, letting the oil out fast.. and you are still feeling the pumping action... I guess could also be in the relief valve.

It is a scotch yoke pump which does use pistons moved by a cam driven by the PTO shaft. You can pull the inspection covers on the sides of the rear end and look for leaks. It would probably be good to also change the fluid. If you are really going to dive into it get an IT FO-4 manual it is cheap and will help alot. Keep posting if you do as there are many knowledgable people on this board. Do a search under parts and pieces in the gallery on the left and there is a picture of a 9N pump.
