Guy's I have a small problem. Have a exhaust leek at the manifold on the back of the manifold, #3 cyl.. The block is ate away a little. I have replaced the gasket, about 1 yr ago but it has blown out again. I wonder if welding or J B weld. What do you think.

Also I'm getting some oil blowing out at this leak. And this cyls, plug has oil on it.Can't keep her running very long.

It's good to 2400 deg F... Boy was I off by a few.

Here's the site:

I love JB Weld BUT they DO NOT recommend it on manifolds and areas exceeding 500 deg. Go to the site and see for yourself. Then go look for Cargo's THermosteel.

Here's the quote from the JB Weld site:

Not recommended for use on manifolds, exhaust systems, and other engine components which normally operate at temperatures above 500º F.

I would expect the head/manifold interface to get pretty darn hot.

It's your choice, but for this I truly would go with THermosteel as it is recommended up to 1600 deg F.

I used JB weld on a cracked block... so NO I am not making any money off this AD.

Burnt block is a problem, but got nothing to do with blowing oil. You've got other problems.

You said your compression was OK a year ago. Check it now, dry and wet. If you don't use your tractor much, you may have stuck rings or valves. Whatever, you've got a cold cylinder. Are you using the hotter H12 spark plug? What condition are your plug wires in? Is your distributor cap and rotor clean? Is your timing correct? Point gap set correctly? Condenser OK?

Yeah, get your block fixed (I'll have to try some of that Thermosteel—I've got the same problem on #4), but you've got other problems.

I agree with Les. If you got a cylinder that isn't firing, The piston going down with both valves closed will create a vacuum which will suck oil from the cylinder walls or whatever source and foul the plug. Then it will be pushed out through the exhaust. I would check the wire and plug to that 'wet' cylinder. Just my opinion..Ron

Robert, I did this repair about 4 months ago on the #4 exhaust port. Clean the block with brake cleaner very good. I had an 1/8" gap, so I used 2 applications of JB Weld to keep it from running. I used a 2x2 square tube with sand paper to finish the block surface. I had a machine shop grind the exhaust manifold. New studs, nuts, gasket. I worked this tractor hard in the fall and the repair held up fine. Philip.

Had a similar problem... JB Weld is good but not sure if it will take the temp. I'll havta see.

NOW, I would recommend Cargo THermosteel. GREAT stuff and no mixing. I got mine at the local auto parts store. If you can't find it there... cruise the NET.

Joel

I used J B Weld. Then used agood flat file on it.
After running the engine for awhile i retighted the manifold nuts.
It seems to be working just find.

Some JB Weld put on the site and sanded smooth will work.

As far as the plug with oil on it, you might do a compression test to check the condition of the rings. Do all 4 cylinders wet and dry and post the numbers.

Mike I did a compression check about a year ago numbers were ok then. But seems like I must have a ring problem.
