Robert, Plastiguage is very thin round plastic strip usually sold in lengths of around 10-12". It is used by cutting a small length and placing it between the journal of an engine crank and the surface of a bearing insert. When the bearing cap is torqued to proper specs, the plastiguage flattens out to a uniform width. When you disassemble the cap you match the width of the band that the plastiguage has become to a printed width guage that comes with it. This will tell the clearance in thousanths of an inch. The wider the band, the less clearance there is between the journal and the bearing. It is used to make sure that the running clearance is within specifications. Would be easier to show you than to explain but I have no photos of plastiguage. Dan J

The FO4 shows a little bit on the use of plastigauge. One of the best books I have found on engines is Motor Auto Engines & Electrical Systems. It cover almost everything from Covair engines, Rotary engines, Gas turbans, Generators, starters, ignition systems, water pumps, thermostats etc. You can find them on ebay for $5 to $10. Well worth the money. Get the latest version you can find. Disclamer, I have nothing to do with them, i just find them very informative and a good reference.

Plastigauge is like a plastic thread that comes in a paper sleeve. Federal Mogul makes it. You cut off a piece the length you need to span the journal on a bearing. With the bearing cap off you lay it on the journal. Carefully replace the bearing cap and torque it to specs. DO NOT move the shaft. Remove the cap. The plastic thread will be squashed. The paper sleeve has marks on it. You find the mark that matches the squashed width of the plastic thread and it will indicate the clearance between the journal and the bearing. It is not perfect but will give you a real good idea of what you have. That and a good inspection of the bearing surface and the journal surface will give a good indication of what you need to do. If the journal is tapered one end will be wider than the other. Plastigauge comes in diffrent clearance ranges. I usually have red, green and blue on hand. This covers from .001 to .009.

P.S. It is mandatory to use during your reassembly of your rebuild.

It is used to check bearing clearances during reassembly of the motor. HTH
