The lift on my tractor started to be sluggish lifting my backblade and made a noticeable knocking noise, also at times when I had the blade down I could feel a pressure on the control arm and when I attempted to raise the blade it wouldn't budge until I stopped the tractor -if I was moving- and then back up to relieve the pressure. The hydraulics now won't lift at all and nothing seems to happen when I move the lever-like there isn't anything hooked to it? Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated, roger

Sounds like a sticking control valve.

Or if it is a 9N/2N the control valve could have come disconnected from the control rods inside the lift.

If it is a 9N/2N too it would be lots better to operate if you had position control.

See the link below for more information on the Ford lifts

Sounds like a worn cam follower pin or other internal linkage parts. The knocking sound might be worn scotch yolks in the hyd pump as it labors against the other problems in the linkage and adjustments.

You should check the archives for a recent post by Zane. He provides the most comprehesive report on how to troubleshoot the hyd system.

Roger,

I have a 2N that gets pretty weird depending on the temperature. I know my pump needs a rebuild so I am a little less concerned about the issues. It does however exhibit the same type of symptoms occasionally.

I am assuming that you have checked the oil level and that you have the correct oil in there? Changed it lately and there is no water in it? If you are in the cold, make sure there's no water in the oil. Maybe something triggered by temperature or a stuck valve. If the level is ok, pull the inspection cover off and look for either leaks or turbulance. If all OK look at the linkage and the return spring. Chances are if was ok before it's something minor.

If you have a manual, it should be a real help. If not, get one.
