Snow, how to win while the N sleeps

We finally had some snow the other day, so I got to try my new (to me at least) toy. An old Ariens snow blower. Oh boy, that 8N is going to sleep all winter long!

After spending several years fighting trying to plow snow with a blade, I am now fully converted to the joys of having something that picks it up and throws it somewhere else.

No more spending my time looking over my shoulder. No more ripping the driveway or road up with my blade. No more waiting for the hydraulics to warm up enough to work.

Ok, so the snow blower won't handle it when the snow is two feet deep. So what, my 8N didn't either.

Sinning, and loving it!

Nolan (who now adores snow blowers)

I am fortunate, no looking over my back. I have a front mount Dearborn plow. I purchased the tractor at an auction. Am second owner. Three bachelor brothers inherited their grandfathers farm, who got farm for taking a mans place when he was called to serve in the Un-Civil War. Last brother died and auction was held. Tractor purchased in 1946 for $906; cultivator-$135; plow-$112; disc in 1947-$176 and mower in 1951-$307. Overhauled in June 1950-$55.50 The snow is sparkling this evening in Vernon County, Wisconsin.

I agree a pickup is best. If you have a big driveway though, the N is better than the snow blower. My driveway runs north/south so I use the snow blower for the walks, and near my garage, but then I hop on the N and plow it all to the east side of the driveway. One pass down, turn around come back up to the house, and a second pass. Takes 15 minutes on the tractor at most. Then the wind hauls it away.

Take Care
Steve

Been there, done that, quite a lot in the past. Now I put the blade on the Cherokee, turn on the oldies station, get a cup of coffee and take care of the snow in comfort. Tomorrow, after the storm has passed and the sun is out, if I feel like playing , I get out the 2N and cleans things up a little bit.

Nolan, gotta agree. Ive got a 1957 10hp Bolens tractor set up with a 30 inch blower on the front. It stays that way all year and only comes out in the winter. Kinda wimpy tractor for anything but snow but it does blow the cold dry stuff well...the wet stuff is a different matter. My plan is to have a tractor for each use. This should help justify several more old toys.

I just bought a 26" ancient blower but mainly for pushing back the banks when the snow gets piled up too far in. I decided to try it out and did a big path to my garbage can. Guess what the job that took 15 minutes would have taken 2 swipes with the blade and been done in a blink. They both have their limitations and advantages and compliment each other nicely. After 15" of snow the blade just grinds to a stop and its time to blow it.

Remember this reply ! I know in MD you guys don't get as much snow as we do here in NY but, as time goes on I think you may find that you'll hate removeing snow with your Ariens as much as you do with your N ! Like you, I also have a snow blower (Toro) and a 8n with a back blade, I have found them both to be a pain in the a$$, just wait till a windy day (Or night when ya just get home from work) by the time your done blow'n snow, you'll look like frosty the snowman, you'll have snow in parts of your body that a doctor can't even get to !!, and worst yet if you drive your car or truck on the driveway first, ya almost need ripper teeth to break up the matted down snow. Now the 8n with a back blade ?, well, it's like you said, stiff neck, piles of snow where they should'nt be, and broken bones from being ejected from your 8n while plowing in reverse at warp 9.9!(-:

Just do what I do, get yourself a 4wd, leave for work first so when the wife leaves and gets stuck you won't have to push her out !(-:
(And I wonder why I have to sleep in the barn??)

Second dave#1's remarks. I have the Ford with a backblade, last year I bought a hydro Deere lawn tractor with a 4' front blade and sold the Toro blower. On 175' driveway, that snow blower was like scrubbing the floor with a tooth brush, and we have had a pile of snow this year (Detroit area). Most of the time I use the Deere, but when the snow piled up, the Ford came out and pushed it aside.

Go Ford.

Happy Holidays.

Shame on you! I hope you don't put in the same barn as the N. I hope your N wont start next time you need it. Glenn

Nolan-
You might want to try the "Things That Sit In The Corner Of The Shop For 8 Months" chatroom over at Blowers.com.

Just kidding!
