Axle hubs, How tight is too tight?

I tightened the axle hub there's no slop or play in it now. In fact it hardly moves. I need a two foot stillson wrench to make it come around. I know part of this is because of the 80w90 trans oil. That stuff is so thick that It will stall the engine when I let the clutch out, even in neutral. Once the engine's warmed up it's OK,
Stalls when cold. This was before taking the wheel off and tightening up the axle. So how free should it be ? Thanks in advance. Rich

Zane was telling someone a few days ago about cutting shim stock (thin strips) and putting them in the spline to compensate for the wear in the spline. .010"
Once you do this it should be no problem as long as you keep the nut tight.
Sounds like a good fix to me.

If the hub was loose on the axle and it got hard to rotate after you tightened the nut, it means the hub was worn enough to move inward and come in contact with the bearing retainer. If you drive it with the hub tight like this the hub will try to inertia weld itself to the bearing retainer. This is not good. You need a new hub.

John, There can be no doubt that it needs a new hub. However I'm into this machine for over a thousand dollars and now I'm getting cheap in my outlook and solutions. I thought I might try Zane's solution of packing the space with a shim. Unfortunately. It's a little beyond .010. In fact, it took a 1/8 welding rod to remove the slop between the axle and the hub. Guess I'm gonna buy a new hub! Regards, Rich
