8N / 302 ?

I have a good 302 engine and need a engine for
a 49 8N. Is there any way this could be used like
the conversions you here about ? I guess those
are flat heads. Would the conversion kit work
for a 302 ? The tractor has already been picked over for some of the sheet metal, no hood or gas tank so that is not a problem and would just be something good for me and my boy to play with and could always put back close to original if needed.

Ray, I just sold a tractor to a guy in Monroe Iowa that is building the same thing. Except he was using a complete good running 49 8n. I took the 8n motor on trade on a 600 ford.He isn't on the computer but if you e-mail me I'll give you his phone number. The way he talked he made his adapter. But like carl asked, the rearend and trans isn't going to take all that torque. That's the problem they had with the funk conversions. John

My question is would a tractor with such a conversion of a 289 and larger engines be a good work tractor or would it be just for show? Could the transmission and other parts hold up with so much more horse power to be used in the field?

I don't know if you could afford to feed it fuel.... but I think it could be held in check a certain amount by using small carburation. I think trying to use above 50+ HP for field work, hour over hour, would quickly ruin the transmission and/or rear end.

I have wondered about a 50+/- HP diesel from a small car, would that be more practical and fuel efficient for a working tractor.... it wouldn't get a second look at a 'chrome show', tho.

Marvin Baumann has done one with a 351 (also with a Chevy 350 and a Chrysler 318). Here's the link to his Ford "V-8-N" page.

I think Dwight Emstrom or either Marv Baumann has a 302 in an 8N. I saw a 2n at Gray, TN a couple of years ago that had a 289, power steering and disk brakes. You can do anything if you have enough money and time and ingenuity. You basically fabricate an adapter plate/frame rail to hold the engine and tractor together.

Ray, There is a guy whos sells the frame/mount to mate up a GM 4.3 liter v6 on ebay from time to time. you may try contacting him and seeing if he could make one for the 302. I think that would be a great machine. If you decide to do it keep us posted of the progress. Keith

I can not think of a better way to spend some quality time with your son and teach him something at the same time. My two sons and I were always building or working on something and they grew up with a good understanding of how things worked. Surviving son still likes to play with big toys in his spare time, an 8N and restoration of a '72 Ford F250 camper special. There is no reason a 302 could not be installed in an 8N. Might not be too practical but I would bet you both have fun and learn a lot. Caution, It is not going to be a 'drop in'.
Good luck, I am sure we all would like to hear how the project is going.

I would hear mostly negatives. That 351 sure looks fine. Those pic's are really great and if
me and the boy ever start on the project we will keep you posted. Thanks again, yous guys are the best.
