Drag Link Replacement

Guys, a while back I recall someone posting a picture of their rear drag link ends that they had replaced with some parts from I think a Ford Pickup (tie rod end) and I think maybe a Buick (tube end). I foolishly did not print it at the time, now I can't find it in the archives. Does anybody else still have it? I need to do this to my 47 2N.

Thanks!

I replaced mine a while ago and found that the new rear ends were shorter than the old ones. I cut the tube in the middle and inserted a 5/8 inch rod to make them longer. I drilled the tube and rod for 1/4 inch bolts after I got the right length. You can buy the longer replacement rods but I didn't have the $30.00 (each) at the time. This longer rod was a Ford change that came about many years ago.

If you are not trying for originality, the complete replacement assembly recommended in the Ford parts manual is the way to go. Using right and left hand threads on opposite ends enables you to bolt everyting together and then tweak the toe-in by just twisting the steering tubes, rather than having to unbolt one end to adjust the rod length.

While I like to scrounge the junkyard as much as the next guy, you can buy two new rod ends and a new steering tube and have a superior design that just bolts together with hand tools for just $50.00

If you want to use step-up third, it really helps to get all the slop out of the steering linkage and front end, and get the toe-in correct, rather than just "close enough". Believe it or not, it is possible to get the steering stable enough so that you can drive at 18 mph and take your hands off the steering wheel without having the tractor immediately head for the ditch.

Yes, it was $50 per side. From a certain vendor that has already weighed in on your post, and whose name you suggested.

No, I didn't try the FNH counter, though don't count them out in your searches for parts. Supporting the local dealer is worth something, given the time convenience involved in getting small parts. And sometimes they are price competitive.

I also wish I could do more to support this board...

I'll have to call DB, I checked on his web site but couldn't find what I needed at the prices you are indicating.

Thanks again!

Look under "front axle and related parts". Follow the hyperlink that says "see pic". Read the table, pick out the appropriate sleeves and drag link ends, and point and click your way to wobble-free steering.
