Anyone running into problems shipping tractor stuff UPS that is not packaged? I have shipped and recieved stuff from all over that has not been packed but now it seems UPS wants it packaged or levy a sizable extra handling charge. Is this something new or is it my UPS authorized shipper? Seems like since the first of the year was the start of it. ray

WE started useing Fed-Ex be for the last strike, UPS would take 4 days to ship and Fed-Ex 2 days by 10:00am for less money.

Ray,
As UPS has a near monopoly on shipping, they do whatever they damn well please. Even though Fed Ex bought RPS, they aren't serious competition.
UPS now wants bulky items boxed. We used to ship reels of wire as is, but now they will refuse it. They charge a higher rate to ship to residential addresses versus business addresses. They charge an adder for items that exceed their bulk and girth ratios (my Warehouse Supervisor, who is no dummy, can't figure out when they'll charge this). The smallest discrepancy on an address costs an extra $5.
I'm waiting for the day that Fed Ex or someone else comes along to give these bastards a un for their money. Few businesses use anyone other than UPS for shipping (I'm talking the majority of daily shipments-not the odd next-day-air package). My .02.

Ray,

UPS also charges a minimum of $50 to ship a firearm, that's because they're very proud of their record of hiring people from the welfare rolls, they need to charge more to cover their losses. At least that's what I was told when I called and complained about the $50 charge. One thing about wrapping, it hides from prying eyes what's in the box and reduces the temptation for someone to keep it, not that anyone working at UPS would keep it.

Yes, I have had the same problem! They want it boxed, wrapped, or what ever. And if you have one letter or number wrong on the address and one of the UPS people catch it, they get to charge you an extra $5.00!

Never tried to ship stuff not in a box. I was told if it was clean and had no sharp edges I could do that last year. But I was checking on some tires, rims and casting. I just wraped them in cardboard and sent them. Figured they would find something wrong and reject it. Mark H.
