Well I have a new thermostat, upper & lower hose and radiator cap for my '51. I plan to change them on the next decent (weather) day. I was wondering if there is a preferred type or brand of antifreeze for use in the "N" series tractors. Is there a trick to flushing out the block? Any other tips are much appreciated.

Be aware that just opening the drain cock may not work. I had to remove mine and take a punch to break the scale in the block to open the hole, then screw the cock back in.

flushing block, this what i do: drain cooling system, fill up with water usuing garden hose, open block pectcock and radiator petcock, let engine run 30 min. or so with drains open and water flowing just enough to NOT run over at radiator cap. been doing this for over 40 yrs. with no ill effects. fwiw

You might want to look into using the newer propylene glycol anti-freeze. Animals and children do not find this as desirable (no sweet taste) and it is supposed to be more environmentally friendly. This is sometimes known as RV antifreeze, although I have purchased this at auto supply stores. It will mix with water as does "regular" anti-freeze. One caution. You can not use an ethylene glycol tester, but NAPA has an inexpensive tester designed for use with propylene glycol. DickTN

Acutally it's not that animals or children don't find it as desirable. C3H6 Glycol is used in many of the drinks you drink today. It's not poisonous but is just as sweet as it's C2H4 cousin. Don

Don, Although you may be right in some cases, I used Prestone LowTox Propylene Glycol. It has a slight sweet taste but more of a bitter taste than the ethylene glycol. Yes, I was careful to not swallow the stuff. The container says the Prestone is good to -26 F. when mixed 50-50 with water and to -76 F. at 2/3 anti-freeze to 1/3 water. This should work for most people unless they are figuring to drive at the South Pole. Not contradicting you, merely clarifying what I found. Happy tractoring. DickTN

Remember back when coolant meant antifreeze?

A friend of mines son who is in the earth moving business big time went down to south Florida and bought a huge Mitisibishi self loading scraper and had it hauled up here to Talladega County Alabama to use in a land fill. He took off the radiator cap and the system was full of bright green coolant. Antifreeze! Right??? Not!!!!

It got down to about 10% for a couple of days and when the weather got better they went down to move some dirt and found that the welch (freeze) plugs were all laying around the engine and on the ground. They put new ones in and changed the engine oil and them started pouring in coolant. It is running back into the crankcase like Nigra falls. Bad news!!!

The Mitisubisi engine is as big as a small car!

All that glitters ain't gold!

All that's green ain't antifreeze.

They don't need antifreeze in Florida so they only had a coolant treatment to reduce electrolis and it didn't retard freezing at all.

An expensive lesson learned!

Zane,

That's why you have to watch where you buy a tractor, I don't have to worry about one from Maine, but always check the antifreeze when they come from SOUTH of the Maissy Dixie line.

Art,

Any quality ethylene glycol based anti-freeze will work fine, don't feed it to animals or children if you value them,

Good luck.
