Has anyone installed an electronic ignition module on an 8N front mount distributor.
My tractor likes to consume points and I need some help as why or how to improve point life as a front mount is not fun to change, unless someone has a trick they would like to share!
Thanks

Radio Shack offers an electronic ignition kit for under $20. I have installed it on 8ns with front and side mount dist. Kit comes set up for 12v negative ground. Can be modified for use on 6v but must be negative ground. I used a replacement 12v old type front mount coil to retain original apperance. Everything looks original except for my alternator and 12v battery. The spark is unreal. This system is the old type which used the points, but the amperage is lowered through the points so much they should never require replacement. The rub block will wear out first. This item is a catalog order item only, the stores know nothing of this kit. Ck radio shack on the net. Another good thing is it reqires no resistor or condenser. After you muttle through the first kit later ones only take 15 to 20 minutes. If this sounds like a testimonial it is.

I have converted my frontmount and kept the original style coil. $130 parts and machine shop work ...tractor was down for only few days ...never have to replace points/condenser again
...starts in any weather rain, sleet or shine
(outside and uncovered)
...put in gas, lube chassis, check oils, and go

way beyond...PRICELESS

Robert,
You are aware that in order to do any distributor work on your front mount you need to unbolt it (2 bolts) and take it to your workbench (or kitchen table if the boss is not home). Everything is pretty easy to change once you have it in the open.

Robert..... ...there are NO COMMERCIALLY avalilable electronic ignition modules for frontmount N's. (9N/2N/8N)

Yes, there have been cobbled up frontmount electronic ignitions made by experienced electronics techs. And unless you're an experimental geek, you don't want to go there.

2-bolts remove the frontmount ignition system for eazy points replacement on kitchen table. Also makes timing eazier too. Frontmount distributor is off-set cam driven and CAN NOT be installed incorrectly without a BIG hammer.

Frontmount ignition points are consumed because of incorrectly installed or bad condensor.... OR because of a well meaning but miss-guided shadetree mechanics attempt to get hotter sparkies by by-passing the "infamous ballast resistor". ..... ...Dell

I have a front-mount 2N. I worked with Genesee Products to get my electronic ignition going. They can take care of your request, but it is not really cheap. If you are already converted to 12 volt, and have a spare distributor to send them, it is much more affordable. You need to be 12 volt. They will convert your distributor for you, or you can do a portion of the work yourself, if you desire. The lobes on the distributor have to be machined down, so that a magnetic ring will fit on it. Then the ring has to be "phased" (different than timing) and epoxied in the correct phased position. The front mount coil is no longer used. Genesee can provide you with a standard 12 volt coil that can be mounted somewhere on the tractor. I found that behind the toolbox area worked good. You will no longer have the resistor setup either.
Like I said, it is not really cheap to do though. This installation and conversion is not for everyone, but if you do it, you will be happy with the performance of the tractor. It starts on the first push of the button, regardless of the throttle position. But then again, I am sure some people's tractor with points/condensor starts easy too. Good luck. Ken
