Man..... .....you better GET RID OF THAT RUBBER FUEL LINE..... ..... ....put in the steel one. You don't need that extra filter if the tank was done right!

Thanks for the nice comments on my color choice. Like someone else - my wife wanted pink...yuk...

Mike and Ken have a very good point. When I got the tractor from my father in-law he had no idea what year it was. I can't remember the exact number on the engine block, but it puts the year at a '46. I could barely see the number and could not make out the "9N" part at all. Possible engine swap - don't know. I found no gray paint on the belly - just red on top of blue. This gets me thinking the engine may have been replaced and the old gray stripped off and repainted blue. I did find gray on the hood and fenders. Any other way to tell what year it is - little casting differences etc.

Nice use of colors. Looks like a great ride!

One of the neat things about an N is that you can change original colors and they still look good.

I too was wondering about the I beam radius rods. I though that 1944 and later 2N's had the oval rods?

Are you sure you have a '46 2N?? The "I" beam radius rods were changed to tube type after '44..Also noticed that you have a rubber fuel line with inline filter..Is it clear of the hot manifold?? Just my observations...Nice tractor..Ken N Tx

Right now they are steady burn. I have a flash unit in line wired to the parking lights so they will flash in that position, but they are not working. Something to work out. I may have bought the wrong flash unit or a wire crossed up. When I fix it I will let you know.

I think you have a great looking tractor. I, for one, think you should paint it any color you wish..heck it is your tractor.
good job.

Hey Ben - It is a older Dodge alternator. It fits very well with just a couple of washers needed to bolt tightly to the original gen lower mount. It uses a generic voltage regulator with two polls - alternator and ignition.

What is that knob on the left side of your dash?? My second 2N had a cigarette lighter that I tossed in lieu of a wilkie button (chrome hole cover).

Looks interesting..... ....

That is a pull style headlight switch. Tryed to find a rubber covered toggle switch but could not find one.

looks great, excellent use of blue, without looking late model. I have the late model chrysler 'school bus' alternator (square windows on the back) on my 1954 ford tudor. one bolt, one nut, half a dozen washers. has a saddle mount instead of spool mount. the two pulley version lined up great. Great minds think alike ;-) my 9N is getting a front mount 8N generator converted to 12V. If anybody is looking for a rubber switch cover for a toggle switch, find an electronics store that carries the GC brand. i'm getting rid of my toggle, and installing a regular key switch, so the neighbor kids can't get hurt ----hopefully, should they decide to bother my old red and gray horse. GREAT JOB, just don't be afraid to get her dirty.

Phil, you naughty boy! Not only did you paint your tractor with non-sanctioned colors, but you have an alternator AND have moved your key switch!

Seriously. it looks great!. I've moved my starter switch to the same area, since the guy before me cobbled up a separate solenoid. My key switch is also a starter switch.

Be careful! I don't know how long you've had your tractor this way, or whether or not it stays outside, but I can tell you (from past experience) that water WILL run into the key switch since it's angled slightly upward. I keep a glob of plumber's putty mashed over the key slot between uses. It's crude, but keeps out the water and preserves the switch.

Again, nice job!

Ron

You said it Ron. Went to start it up and rain had froze in the switch. Here is an idea - take the large flip top off a tube of lotion/shampoo, bore a hole the size of the switch hole, grind off the exess from the back side, then sandwitch it between the switch nut and dash.

Now that IS an idea! I tried for a long time to find a small metal container (like lip balm) to use, but finally gave up. The putty works as long as I remember to replace it after I'm done. I've got a key switch on my pontoon boat with a weatherproof rubber slotted-type of cover--if I could just find one for the tractor!

Run down to your favorite old-time full-service camera shop and pick up an aluminum film canister...drill a hole in the bottom and voila! If'n yer really worried, screw the lid back on over yer switch!

I own a Yamaha Big Bear 4-wheeler. Since the key slot is positioned upward, keys from a dealer come with the hard rubber cap with slot for a key insert. The item is quite cheap and may be what you are looking for.

I think ya got a real nice tractor. And who cares if it isn't the original color scheme.

I decided not to use the orangish ford red on my 8N, instead opting for a more brick red look.
