I replaced the wire harness and got everything hooked up properly, turned the switch on and the resistor started to smoke. I did get to check the resistor before it started smoking and I did get the desired 3.5 volts headed to the coil with the points closed. My question is could the switch be bad?

It is normal for the balast resister to smoke.
It runs hot and when it is first used
the factory oil coating burns off.
It is not a problem with your switch.
