I have a 8n Ford but the serial # is worn off.
As near as i can tell it is a 1948 or 49.
Is there any way to tell for sure what year it is?
Ron..... .

Lots of folks here with lots more experience, but....

There are a number of ways to narrow down your year.

For starters, check out the Smith's website on identifying your tractor:

Link

You'll find enough there to get you going.

Also, there are casting marks on the rear axle trumpets and in various other parts of the tractor. I don't remember exactly how to interprete them, but you will recognize the year stamp (ie 48, 49, etc.. Do an archive search and you will find the "key" for the month. No guarantees, of course, that someone didn't change out cast parts, but you may see a pattern.

I would also try real hard to read the serial number....strong light and you might even try putting a white piece of paper over it and lightly shading with a pencil....

Enjoy!

If you look around on some of the castings you will see some date codes in a format like E 14 47 (E=May 14, 1947). You can also go to the site below, find the link to identify your tractor and help narrow it down from there.

Good Luck!
