I have an N block that has a perfect boss where the serial # should be but no #. Think about it a little, the tractor was new and the block showed up with a casting problem or many other problems that could surface in a new engine. The friendly local Ford dealer ordered a new block that had no serial # and replaced it. Maybe someone forgot to put anti freeze in it. Alcohol was commonly used as antifreeze in the 40s and had a tendency to boil off when the weather got a little warm, hence the strength weakened, hence many cracked blocks. Just a few possibilities. If you really want a serial # check the bottom of the hydraulic pump for a date, convert it, and stamp that # into the block.

I may have suggested this to you before but try a mirror to reflect the sunlight onto the serial #.

It is not the same as just a 'bright light'.

You might be surprised.

So far as I know there is little or no difference between the 48 and 49 8N

Look for casting numbers on the rear axle housings, the engine block, the head, the hyd pump and likely some other places. But remember, these parts could have been swaped out over the years.

Ron..... ..other than intellectual curosity, any particular reason why you are obsessed about determining wheather your 8N is a 1948 or '49? You property tax man? Insurance man? County license bureau? Last will and testament? Parts man? Inquiring minds would like to know..... ....respectfully, Dell

Thanks to all for the Info.
And the reason i want the serial # is whenever I order parts the first thing the parts house wants to know is what is the serial #.
Thanks again.

Partsman will never know the difference..... Yes, there are some very few N-Parts specific serial number wize. Most has to do with the 8N engine change from frontmount distributor to sidemount distributor and also effected the 6 volt generator mount. Occured at s/n 8N263844 in mid 1950..... ...Dell
