Just as I was finished plowing last night(48 8N w Dearborn loader),as I backed up while turning, the loader bucket banged into a frozen snowbank kinda side on. Damage 1 is an easy fix...some welding on a cracked loader arm. What has me head scratching is....why now would there be hyd fluid leaking badly around the filler plug in loader frame. This happened all at the same time, and the crack in loader arm is nowhere near the filler plug, besides, the cracked part of loader arm doesn't even serve as hyd. resevoir..by the way, it is a dearborn model 19-23 prior model. thanks for any suggestions or ideas gents!

thank you Mike and others who replied. I guess with -40 chill factor and all that leaking fluid I missed the obvious...the pipe has a definate crack in it just under the the fill plug. I'll let you know,Mike, if I need to take you up on those pics...well gotta go to friends shop now and do some welding.

Yes, Bob, if I understand your ? right, the system is vented via a vented filler plug. And yes I definately hear ya about all that crap being in the way, but unfortunately I'm not farming, so about 90 % of tractor use for me is with loader for snow and a few other odd jobs I can invent for playing!

I would guess that the frame was slightly distorted and the hole is out of round. Or there may be a crack that you can't see hidden in the threads. I assume that it is the drain plug at the very bottom of the tubing kinda under the pump?

thanks for the reply Mike, but oddly enough it is not the drain plug leaking, rather it is around the filler plug which of course is way up at the top of the loader frame and under no pressure as this part of frame serves as hyd resevoir. Actually, there shouldn't even BE any fluid up that high in the frame/resevoir. Ichanged it myself about 6 months ago and didn't fill it that much.

Could it be that the impact put pressure on that portion of the system for an instant?

just a thought.

N - joy.

third party image

Hmmm...you are right. The big fill plug on the right side should not even have fluid near it. The smaller one on the left side of the loader should be at the top of the fill level. Unless there is some pretty obvious damage to the resevoir tubes (crushed) then I gotta say that I don't know.

That's a great lookin unit, Mike. thanks for the pic. and reply. I assume this is your tractor. Looks exactly like my loader except I see you have doublewide bucket. must be a lot better for snow removal, which we have plenty of here. Question 1 My fill plug is on the left side of tractor as you sit on seat facing ahead. Ithink i can see yours in pic same place, just under your left headlite? Ques 2...you mention a smaller one on the other side , pretty sure I don't have that...also sounds like that one indicates fill level, which I've always wodered what fill level is? How much hyd. fluid does yours hold to fill level? sorry for the longwinded ?'s but I wondered this stuff a long time. One more...Is that a vented fill plug on yours, which I assume they were originally, and where do you get parts for your loader? Many thanks for your patience with this inexperienced Canadian! O, one more thing, what do you use for hyd. fluid in yer loader?

The way that I have done it is to remove the small plug on the right side. Then use the fill plug on the left side to fill it up until the fluid comes out the hole on the right which is lower than the fill plug (this also acts as a vent so that you don't get any air trapped in the system). Once you fill it to the point that you are getting fluid out the small hole then it is full.

Mine has just standard pipe plugs in it, the larger one is about 3/8 or maybe 1/2 inch, the small one is 1/8 or so.

I have just used universal hydraulic fluid in mine. The double wide bucket is nice, but it is almost too heavy. If I could find a smaller bucket I would probably swap it.

If you need some pictures of the location of the smaller plug on mine let me know and as soon as it quits snowing I'll go take a couple and post them for you.

Hope this helps!
