My tractor is a 1953 TO-30. I think the 6 volt regulator is the same. The generator stops charging, if I tap on the regulator, it will charge for 10 seconds or so then stop again. This regulator is 1 year old, it has failed the same way as my last regulator when it was 3 years old. I can open it up, polish the relay connections, and it will be ok for a month or so. Any ideas? Just getting tired of cleaning contacts.

You could try one of these solid state type of voltage regulators. I have not tried them but they should be better than the point type of regulator. Maybe my 8N will get a new one soon, as the fairly new regulator works only when it wants to. They cost about $40.00 plus shipping.

You didn't say if your battery was dead or not. If your battery is charged enough to start the motor, then the regulator is doing its job. As I understand them, they prevent damage to the battery and generator by cutting out when the battery is fully charged. Just my opinion..Ron

I would start with a very good visual inspection. Look at all wires for bare spots, tug on all connections... you may have some other problem ... I loose wire elsewhere in the harness could be causing arcing inside the regulator...

Then measure the battery voltage, it should be around 7 to 8 volts when it the tractor is running.

If that does not turn something up I would take the regulator and the generator to a good rebuilder and have them tested together.
