Ron..... ....That a qualified "maybe" an 8N Sherman will fit a 9N. From what I've been able to determine all Shermans had a "helix" output gear to mate with the N-Tranny's "helix" input countershaft gear which appeared sometime in 1942. 9N tranny input gear was straight cut and noisey, farmers complained, Ford made a change to quieter and stronger helix cut gears. Ford supplied a tranny up-grade kit for 9N owners that wanted to pay the dealer to install the quieter helix gears. (takes 2, one for the input shaft to drive the tranny lower countershaft gear cluster. I don't know if the helix gear up-grade parts are still available. If your 9N has straight cut gears, the Sherman won't fit. I'm told that there is a special helix id stamped into lip of helix trannys somewheres. Looks kinda like cap "HX". Repairing any gearteeth is generally beyound the capablility of most machine shops. And if you can find a machine shop that can repair your broken gear, you'll probably have a heart attack at the cost. And sorry, I don't know of any Sherman parts places..... ...Dell
