Hi to all

I installed a new battery (without tie down) and was plowing snow. The batt slid and shorted out on the hood. The tractor shut off and would not restart ( no juice). I tried to jump it with a batt booster and still no juice. What did I damage? regulator? battery? starter solenoid? Help!!

Allan..... ....new battery eh? takker back and complain.

Don't really know, several possiblities, broken internal battery post connection comes to mind. Bad battery output cable clamp. Bad battery cable inside molded battery clamp.

Don't think your welding miss-adventure would muckkup your starter solenoid OR muckkup your voltage regulator, (unless you've converted to 12 volts with built-in solid state voltage regulator)..... ....Dell

I did more diagnostics today. I put my jumper pack directly to the starter and it turns the engine over. I did it with the switch on to see if it would start, and no fire. My confusion here is, if I put the jumper pack on the batt shouldn't that provide the power to the ignition and the starter (it doesn't) even if the batt is bad? I have not checked the batt with my load tester (garage too junky to find it) or with a volt meter.

Allan..... ...think about the way the electricity gets passed around. Comes from the battery (post) down the BIG cable to the convient BIG terminal on the starter solenoid. That same convient terminal then feeds power to the ignition switch which passes power to your ignition coil.

If ya don't get power to the ignition coil, ain't gonna start no matter how you get the starter to turn over by directly connecting to the starter buss bar terminal from the starter solenoid's OTHER big terminal. Electricity don't go backwards thru the starter solenoid.

If you connect your battery charger to your battery terminals, if'n one of the terminals are bad, ya ain't gonnna charge yer battery enuff to turn the starter motor eather. And your battery charger probably don't have euff gutts to turn your tractors starter motor ennysways.

Sofar, everything points to a bad battery post terminal..... ....Dell

Could he disconnect the 'bad battery'., jump with 12v to the starter and let the genny take off and provide the power to the ignition? ( Will an N run like that sans battery? )

He could then take the battery in for a diagnosis or a prorate if the battery failed internally...
