I'm rebuilding a 9N engine. I did not find a cam thrust spring (8n6276) when I took it apart (and the cam cover was all grooved out) so now I'm trying to find this spring. I have looked and called all over and no one can help me. Is there someone on this list who can help me out?

Thanks,
Paul

Mine had the spring intact but had eaten a hole in the front cover anyway. My camshaft and lifters were also quite worn. A flat tappet cam like whats used in the N's is ground with a taper in the lobes to promote lifter rotation. The lifters are ground with a radius on the bottom to complement the lobes taper, otherwise the cam and lifters would wearout quickly. This taper also makes the cam want to thrust rearward toward the block as the front of the lobe is a larger O.D. than the rear by .001" to .002". In theory, no thrust spring, bumper or button is needed. I reground my cam AND lifters and replaced my front cover with a good used one. My gasket set had multiple cover gaskets of varying thicknesses with instructions to select the gasket or gaskets to set the camshaft endplay to I believe .004".

My 8N did not have one and nither does my 9N. They are no longer available. I think it was (don't hold me to this)Zane that said that it is not critical as the helical cut of the gears has a tendency to keep the gear up to the block. That makes sence to me. Make sure the groves in the block where the gear rides are clean. This is what lubes the back side of it.

When I rebuilt my 2N it had one. Frankly, I don't know how you could manage without one since the cam is then bumping right on the softer aluminum timeing cover. I would call some salvage yards if none of the sponsors of this Board have the part. My $.02
