Opinions on how to mount extra battery...

Here's the deal...

I need to mount/carry a 12-volt battery to run a bilge pump...Ayuh...A bilge pump...I am going to be gathering sap for Maple Syrup, and need to use the pump to transfer sap from collection points to the gathering tank...What I am using is a 55 gallon plastic barrel set up on the drawbar between the lift arms...I secure it with a ratchet strap...Works great...but the problem is getting the sap from the 55 gallon barrels where the tap lines gather it, and then into the one on the tractor...

I need to carry a 12-volt somewhere to run the pump...And no, this is not a good enough reason to convert...

Any ideas short of welding a box on the hood or fenders will be appreciated!

Sounds like a good 'nuff reason to me! The mounting is not the end of it. You need a charger and what if you are out there a long time and run out of juice? The 12V 8N eliminates these problems and solves others in the future.

While I agree with you in part, the pump I will be using will draw only 3.3 amps under load, and run no more than 1 hour per day...To top that off, the tractor will be parked next to my shack where I have power and a charger...

If I were to need more light, or had a continuing need for 12-volts, I would certainly consider converting...At this point, this is the first use I have found for 12-volt in the field in my circumstances...

Get a Plastic Battry box and a nylon ratchet strap and strap it to the running board if you have a 8N since it is tempory should work. Mark H.

Go to the Tractor Photos on left side of this board and in the search box type in the name "Bishop." You will see my 8N Louisiana Bumper. It was on the tractor when I bought it, and it has room for a toolbox and a place for an extra battery. I put a 12 volt battery there for the CB radio so my wife can find me when I'm to far away for shouting.

A welder I know has a 9N with a big toolbox mounted where the front bumper would normally attach. It's a great convenience. You could probably fabricate something like that, wouldn't have to be super strong just to carry a battery.

I would suggest that you get one of those 3 pt carryall frames and make something that could do many things. With a carryall frame you could put planks on the bottom of it and set you drum, pump and battery all together on it. When you get done, just unhook the whole thing. I picked up mine used for 10 bucks, but I think they normally go for 50 or so. I find it to be very handy for moving lots of things, including 55 gallon drums of diesel fuel and hydraulic fluid.
