All,

What are the specs on this mower? Sickle length, parts availability, ease of use?

Thanks,

Arne

The 14-15 had a 6 foot sickle bar. Yes, you need the special brackets to mount it on the N, which are hard to find. Probably the hardest are the extension arms for the 3-point. I made some out of 3/8" pipe until I found the correct ones. The moweris a bear to put it on and off the tractor, but once on it does a great job of mowing.

I don't know the specs, but if it's like a lot of sickle mowers, the blade length can be altered by putting on a different blade. Maybe Ed Gooding will see this and send you some of his info.

If it's the style I'm thinking of, you will want to make sure you also get all the necessary brackets that usually get left on the tractor. I ran across an 8N for sale for $800 that had the sickle mower brackets on the top link and under the right rear wheel. I kind of intended to buy it with the thought that if it really wasn't worth restoring at least I could part it out. WRONG! Other than the sickle mower mounting hardware, there was very little there worth salvaging. I'm going to wait another month and if he still has it, I'll offer him $300.

Thanks Jim,

Was that a belly sickle or a 3pt? I can't imagine what all a person would need with a 3pt mower, but thanks for the heads up.

Actually, I think I'll just use what I have. I set the 'ol JD no.5 up last year and rebuilt the whole dang thing. Probably ought to at least use it a whole season. LOL

I was thinking of a 3 pt sicle mower. I use a JD #9 mounted sickle mower to cut a couple acres of hay. I don't have enough hay to afford a haybine or anything too modern so my free sickle mower does the job.

I really don't know a lot about Dearbord 3 pt mowers other than I've seen pics posted of strange brackets mounted on 8N's with questions like "does anyone know what this is?" The answers were that they were needed to mount a Dearborn sickle mower. When I saw the brackets on the $800 8N I recognized them as the same hardware as in previous posts here. Ask me to hook up a Dearborn sickle mower and it would probably take me all day to figure it out without a manual.
