We are getting over this 2 feet of snow here in delaware. My 8n had a hard time getting traction to push the snow. would chains be enough help or are wheel weights required. This is alot of snow for us 6" is more typical. Your opinions please.

I remember selling a lot of chains when I was in WNY. Don't see them used too much in Colorado. They are a definate asset to an N series. Chains come in several styles. One type looks like a typical truck chain and is best for icy conditions or on pavement. Another has large twisted links and is best for deep snow, mud or soft ground. This type doesn't lend itself to high speeds and will give a rough ride. Remember to space your wheels so your fenders have lots of clearance. You will expend less energy putting them on than you will digging that old N out with a shovel. Ed

Dont forget that chains not only help traction, but add weight.

there was a time when i had weighted tires on my 8N. then i was offered a a pair of nearly new TURF tires that i couldn't pass up. i put chains on the turf tires and haven't had a problem in the snow. actually i am amazed at what the tractor can do with just chains! next i will try plowing the garden.

I agree with Dave#1.
Chains will do a lot more than weighted tires.
And chains with weighted tires will do a lot more than you ever expected.

Chains are a bigger help than wieghts or filled tires IMO We got more snow this year in NY than any other year in memory, and this year I never put my chains on my 8n, "WHAT A JOKE !", Ya just can't get any traction without chains, one little trick I do is, I start at the top of my driveway, put the old 8n in "4TH GEAR", fly down the driveway at warp 9.9 and drop my 7'back blade and hang on for dear life LOL, Besides be'n kind'a fun, it seems to work??
Next year, I'm putting my chains on early..... .....like in August !!
LOL

later,dave
