Thanks to all that replied to my 12 volt question,it seems some do like 12 volts and some don't, I did replace my battery cables, I had a brand new set off a old 1980 Ford F-100 here at my place but still turns to slow to start, now I'm trying to clean and set the points, it's hard working on them, there's not much room under the hood, does anyone have the settings for the points?, I have a set of feeler guages.

Thanks again, this is a great site.

Rob

Rob,

Not all people frequenting this board have the manners of Dellhole, feel free to keep asking questions and don't bother even reading the responses from those who are bound to be less than gracious, or at worse, civil in their responses.

Keep on trying, good luck.

Mike

Robby..... ..glad you're reading your messages.

Read'em again. 1/3 of 'em specifically said "don't use 12 volt battery cables", well guess what? Your 1980 F-100 was 12 volts from factory. Guess what 12 volt cables do to a 6 volt battery starter? Chokes the volts and really slows the starter and makes it hard to start. Gettcha some real 6 volt battery cables. 1/0 size of your thumb, and that will help your starting problems. $10 cheap.

Read your messages again. Several specifically told you to remove your frontmount distributor (2-bolts) and work in a nice warm shop and replace your ignition points. Frontmount ignition point gap is 0.015..... .....respectfully, Dell

Rob,

I hope you meant the "I'm sorry" in the same sense that the students said "Yes, Sir!" and No, Sir!" to the old fashioned school master back in the one room school days. That is because having been reading/posting this board almost as long as Dell, I know that me meant no mallice. Rather his seemingly curt comments really are more of a admonition to use "your head", that "you are really smarter than the question implies", and "I want the BEST out of you!" from the OLD School Master. :-)

We all get frustrated when things are not working as they should and often leap off in the wrong direction. Dell (the school Master) is saying STOP before you leap and you are more apt to do the right thing.

Hope that puts Dell's comments in the right prospective.

Regards,
Larry

I think you may have missed Larry's point. This board in general, and I think Dell in particular, is made up of primarily politically non-correct males. You get excellent advice, and all that is implied is to pay attention and return some whenever you have it to offer. Some of the best learning experiences I ever had were preceeded by "Dammit I told you once now listen....." (my father) or "Haynes, you ignorant >>>>>" (my Drill Instructor). Point is....very few of the respondents have the time or inclination to keep up with today's wussy-don't offend anyone verbage. And, I think it's no problem at all, given all the good advice we great unwashed get from these guys.

First, the cables off that 1980 Ford are most likely twelve volt cables and a big part of your problem. Shoot the works and throw twenty buckos at a set of six volt [two gauge or better] cables at the local parts house.

Second, front mount distributors are made to be worked on off the tractor. Two wrench one beer finagle to get them off and the drive tang is off set so you can only get them back one way unless you force them--can't get out of time. Pull the coil lead--mark the plug wires--pull the coil--take out two cap screws and the distributor will snake out around the fan and fan belt. If you can't remember or don't know when the points were changed last go for broke and put another ten bucks into a set of points and consensor.

Your mileage may vary
