I need to clean and coat my gas tank. Planned to do it this summer when I finally water blast some rust off and paint the old girl.

I recently replaced my fuel line- fabricated one out of brake line. I would like to add an in line filter as an interium solution. Any suggestions as to size and or problems?

Many thanks.

Thanks for the input. I have a new filter/bowl assembly installed. I just installed a rebuilt carb and it managed to get dirt in main jet. I need to do something until summer.

I may try to get a larg filter and use it until summer.

Pop, There was a discussion a few weeks ago about strainer funnels for use when adding gas. Might still be in the archives. Sometimes, dirt in the tank can get there due to dirty gas cans. Just a thought. DickTN

As others have said, there is no pressure in the system just gravity fed, and there are other filters. However, my 51 had an inline filter on it when I got it 14 years ago, and so far no problems. The filter is approximately 1-1/2 inches in diameter, 2 to 2-1/2 inches long (standard auto parts type I guess), attached to the line with short lengths of rubber hose and clamps.

Hope this helps,

JA

I think Dick has it right. When that new fancy filter you want to add on gets clogged up and the tractor quits you will be cursing while walking all the way back to the barn from the farthest point on the property - happens every time. grin

I used the Eastwood treatment to coat my 8N's tank - a lot of seperate chemical baths had to be sloshed around so it took the better part of a day - with much time in between to get side tracked.
I ended up leaving the coating to set up for almost a month.

Don't forget you will have to use a vented gas cap as the original vent gets sealed up in the process.

Pop, This question has been asked before. The general consensus seems to be that this is not a good idea. There is very little pressure to move fuel through the filter, being a gravity system and the inline filters are designed to be used with systems having a fuel pump. The inline filter is therefore very likely to plug easily. You already have three filters (strainers) in the system, one in the tank, a screen in the shutoff above the glass bowl and one in the carburetor elbow. Two of these can be accessed without draining the tank. It doesn't seem that adding another filter is going to buy you much. Your call obviously. DickTN
