Just purchased a 1940 9 N that is quite complete. Haven't actually got it home yet, but one question is: What do they do for a thermostat in the coolant system? I understand that they can insert one in the hose from the engine to the radiator, but it is seldon done. How does running without a thermostat work when it is zero or even below freezing? Isn't that hard on the engine, or do you have to put cardboard on the radiator, which can then work the other way, i.e. too hot.

The thermostat does go into the upper radiator hose. I personally would always use one. It allows the engine to warm up to proper operating temperature and keeps it within a few degrees of the correct operating temperature. Without it, the engine has the ability to run cooler than normal, creating additional deposits and not burning away combustion by-products. Believe it or not you really want the engine to run at correct temperature, not cool.

If memory serves, I believe the pointed end goes toward the radiator.

Phil,

My recommendation is to ALWAYS use a thermostat, summer and winter. It does go in the upper radiator hose.
