I need some other opinions:My wifes 1999 Passport (Honda)Has a problem with the starter keeps buzzing after the engine cranks or is cut off.The only way to stop it is to take the batt. cable loose. As soon as you touch the cable back to the post it will buzz again. If you hold down the key and touch the cable to the post it will crank and run but continues to buzz like its not kicking back out.I think it may be the solonid switch stuck but I am not sure.It cranks and runs but never quits buzzing, making that kickout sound, what do you guys think? And if I take it to Autozone can they check both the solonid and starter and do the come seperate or will I have to buy the starter to get the solonid..Im sweating bullets..Thanks R.M. Go to the starter and remove the black/white wire at the solenoid after you start it up. If the noise goes away you have a switch problem. If noise is still their the starter needs to come off and checked.

R.M.,
At first I thought your wife was going somewhere overseas but after reading the post it sounds like just the opposite. grin

I would take the starter with solenoid to a generator shop and see what they say. When that happened to my GM starter motor, the whole thing self destructed before I could unhook the battery. I believe they said the solenoid was the cause and I think you can buy just the solenoid but have to get both to get the starter? Maybe different for Honda's.

Lots of starter/generator experts here on the forum - I'm sure thay can better explain what happened to your starter.

Mountain Man: I had a Ford that did like you were talking about.I started to crank it on the job and when I let up on the starter it kept cranking and before I could stop and get the cable off it dientergreated the starter.Course it was a strait shift so It took me a while to decide what to do.This one is a little different it only whirls after starting. The bad thing is it only has about 30,000 miles(4 years old) on it and so did the Ford when it happened. Ok thanks to everyone who responded I better go to work on it now to do some checking. I sure could use some of the starter rebuild guys today its really raining in Alabama...R.M. In AL.
