I recently dismantled my 1950 8n with the plan to rebuild it. The tractor ran fine before I began the project. I planned to rebuild / clean up the electrical, hoses, paint, carburetor, tune up, radiator, etc. I was not in for a true engine overhaul....it simply did not need it. I noticed at teardown that the cotter pin at the rear of the clutch plate was leaking a little and not being equipped for was splitting the tractor, I had to have my dealer replace the seal. When I sent the tractor out for this "simple" repair, i was told that the engine needed a complete overhaul, crankshaft needed to be turned, new bearings, etc. I know the dealer and trust them completely. Unfortunately, they want around $3,000 for a complete overhaul. That is more than I paid for the tractor! Do I simply put it all back together and hope for the best? I already have a '53 jubilee and they are both used only as farm toys with minor work loads. Or do I take this on myself and rebuild it as I can afford to over time?

For $3000 you can buy a real nice 8N. If it ran good then why fix it.

Why do they think it needs a rebuild. Compression test numbers?
Oil pressure?
Smoking?

I would have them fix what you wanted fixing and enjoy it. IN the mean time get some number and some other quotes.

You should be able to have a rebuild done for half that quote. Check the archives.

Rick,
A rebuild kit including new sleeves is under $500 and is a lot of fun. The cost here in S.E.Michigan is about $60 for a crank regrind.
For under $600 is a fair estimate for a do-it-yourself rebuild.
It is not hard and is a lot of fun.
I rebuilt a 2N about 20 years ago and will rebuild my 8N as soon as the weather gets nice here in Michigan(Probably will have our summer the first week of July this year may even last a couple weeks)it was -10 below 0 this morning.
I also bought a 53 Jubilee last Sept. and love it. My 8N runs fine and does not use any oil but the oil pressure is about 15lbs at 1500 R.P.M. and 5lbs when idling. I am retired and from past experience know that I would have a lot of enjoyment from the rebuild.
Anyone who has ever rebuilt one of these engines themselves will tell you that it is an enjoyable and educational experience.
Go for it!
Jim

I think, at this point, that I would just put the tractor back together. From what you say, the engine will probably be OK for your needs. I don't think an overhaul will be required until you have excessive oil consumption or too low of compression. Hope this helps. :})

If you rebuild it yourself it won't even cost you half of what the dealer is going to charge you. I think you can get a rebuild kit for around 400 dollars right here on this site. Pick the 8N, 9N, 2N parts button up top to get an idea what the kit costs. Then you can check around at what the crank is going to cost to get turned. Some things you need to consider before even rebuilding the engine. Do you have good oil pressure, does it exhaust a blue smoke, and does it start easy and have good power to do the work you want to do with it? If everything is ok then no need to rebuild it at this point.
