Just wanted to say thank-you to this board for all of the advice on these wonderful old tractors.
I purchased my first tractor, a 53 Jubilee, late last summer to manage my 40 acres in northern Michigan. Unfortunately I left her out in the rain and was unable to get her started again so I could bring her home to southern Michigan for a winter make-over.
I've spent 5 months pouring over the archives and reading this discussion forum every day and I now feel that I have enough information to get the old girl running as soon as the snow melts in the spring. Again, thank-you...
Also, nobody that I knew could tell me what the extra lever above the PTO was used for and all I knew was that when the lever was moved the tractor would not go forward or backward in any gear but the PTO would continue to run. Thanks to this forum I now know that I have Ford's first attempt at a "LIVE PTO" and that it still works.

Don't forget to check for water in your hyd fluid. After leaving it out in the rain it could easily leak in - a $3 shifter boot solves most of that issue - and condensation can also be a problem for tractors left out side.

Welcome to the wonderful world of N's

That's a very true observation for a 9N, 2N or 8N, but only kinda true for an NAA. Starting with the Jubilee in '53, the trans, hydraulic system and rear diff are three separate compartments. Each can be drained and/or filled independently of the other. So a leaky shifter boot "shouldn't" result in water in the hydraulic system. In the transmission definitely, but not necessarily anywhere else.

However, after all these years the seals between the three compartments probably aren't as tight as they were in the 50's so stuff (oil, water, etc) can transfer between them.

Overall the advice is good: change the fluids after being out in the weather all winter.

Thanks Jim,

I guess the brain (mine) wasn't fully engaged - I didn't realize he was talking about an NAA. I've never seen an NAA up close so didn't think about the differences, even though I've read about them here many times.

Jubilee wont start, left in the rain?
Mine did that too. It was usually the points and condenser. Got so sick of adjusting the things that I put in electronic ignition. No problems now. I think she'd almost run under water! Remember: 90% of N Tractor "Carburetor Problems" are electrical.
