MY 49 8N TRANS KICKS OUT OF 3RD GEAR AFTER ENGAGING CLUTCH. SOMETIMES IT STAYS IN AWHILE.I TOOK THE COVER OFF AND DON'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG. THE MAIN SHAFT GEARS LOOK GOOD AND FOUND NO BROKEN DETENT SPRINGS.ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Well, you did not say anything about the detent ball, or the shift rail, these may be worn also. When you remove the tranny cover, look at the shift fork on top in the back of the tranny. Third gear is in front of the shift fork.
Happy Motoring

Most probably you have worn bearings letting the shaft move up and down and back and forward or one or more of the gears themselves are loose on the shaft they are mounted on letting them wobble. No amount of detent will keep one in gear if this is the case.

Does anybody have some good pictures of the inside of the 8N transmission so that the top and bottom assemblies can be seen? If I could see a picture I could just about tell you which part is the culprit.
