I have a dearborn frontloader on my 49 8n. It has a front-mounted pump. When I lift the bucket, it is very slow and jerky (up a little, stop, whine, up a little, and so on). I openned the fill plug and this foamy mess that used to be hydraulic fluid came oozing out. It also blurped out these huge air bubbles not just little ones. The cylinders are now leaking, they didn't before, the pump has always had a slow, drip, drip leak. The fluid is new, I drained and refilled this fall with Harvest King ISO 100, SAE 30 anti-wear hydraulic oil. HELP!! the snow is falling!

Try extending all the cylinders completely when you fill the frame reservoir. I had a similar problem and this solved it for me. You may have to repeat the process several times and run the loader through its paces. I wouldn't be worried about overfilling. It doesn't seem possible to me. Good Luck.

Does this loader have a filter on the hydraulic return line? If so, I suspect it might be clogged (my dad's loader had pretty much your symptoms until we replaced the filter).

The leaking on the cylinders might indicate that the fluid that it used to have was a heavier grade or that the new fluid wasn't compatible with the old stuff (just a guess).

Ringy - if you have a "foamy mess" in your hydraulic reservoir, you still have water in your hydraulic fluid. Sounds like you need to change it again. Somehow you are getting moisture in the system - either condensation or some other source. You mentioned "snow is coming" - which means freezing temps also - be careful, I have blown hydraulic fittings due to frozen water in the lines. Try to warm up the tractor pretty well before you try to use the loader. Good luck

There is no filter that I know about. I can't see one anyway. What kind of fluid should I use. Thank you for your input.

On my dad's loader, there was a felt filter in the bottom of the reservoir tank. We didn't realize at first that it even had a filter and wasted a lot of time looking for other problems. I wouldn't be surprised if there is one on your loader (don't know enough about Dearborns to know for sure).

Given that so many others seem to suspect water contamination, what color is the fluid? Is it milky at all?

I think Geoff has a good point. It may be that the cylinders aren't bled of air yet after the fluid change. If this is the problem, his advice is right.

As for the fluid, I think my dad uses a lighter grade in his loader. How does the new stuff compare with what was in there before -- is it noticeably thicker? How well does it flow in the cold weather? If it's too thick, that could cause cavitation in the pump and the same symptoms as a clogged filter or return line.

You've reached the limit for what I know about hydraulics -- and most of what I do know is pretty general. As a result, I don't have any clear solutions. Maybe it's time to visit a local repair shop and see what they say?

Hello Ringy, I think you have some moisture in your hydraulic oil. The whine and jerking you are having while raising the loader is because the pump is starving for hydraulic fluid. If it were mine, I would drain the old fluid out, and flush with something like diesel fuel or solvent, then replace with new oil. Harvest King is a good oil...I use it all the time....but you might want to try a 20wt since it is winter. I use 20wt year around in my loader. It would be good to check the return hose to the loader pump just to make sure it is not blocked. I have seen some older hoses come loose on the inside and shut them selves off....while the out side of the hose looks perfectly normal. You can tighten the ends of your hydraulic cylinders by turning them in 1/8" incerments until the leaking stops.
