Coil spring burnup

What could cause the coil spring on my 8n to get so hot that it would melt or burn off. 2nd coil that has done this.
the fuses 30 amp have not blown. the tractor ran fine till I left the key on, when i was charging the battery. any help would be great

The spring burned due to too many 'lectrics trying to get through it too quickly. 30a fuse in this circuit? Would not even want to take a swag. Or is the fuse of which you speak in the light circuit?
If you left the key on for any length of time while the engine was not running the coil and points are probably fried anyway.
