I have my 8n for four years now. It ran great with the carburetor that came with it. I was pulling a log out of a field and the log caught on a rock. The tractor jerked and stalled. Couldn't get the thing started again for months. Gas just ran out the Carburetor. Tried rebuilding it, no good. Got a new carb and everything ran great for a year. Stalled it out and couldn't get it started again. gas just runs out the carburetor. I have spark. When I try to start it it just fires occassionally. Of course a well meaning buddy tried to adjust the carb and now it just leaks gas. Any clues about what may be wrong and how do I adjust the carburetor back to the way it is supposed to be?

gas running overboard out of a carb is pretty likely a stuck needle and seat. with a fifty year old gas tank there is plenty of crud to wash down and cause the needle to hang up.

I would close the valve at the glass strainer; then pull the plug on the bottom of the float bowl and drain what is in there. replace the plug

then run both adjustment screws in all the way--don't overtighen the brass--and back out a turn and a half. this ought to be close enough to get it to start. then adjust like the other posts suggest.

if this cures it put purging gas tank on your spring "to do list"

happy holidays

Perry..... ...the problem with N-Carburators is they are out in the open where everyone can get their screwdrivers on the adjustment jets. One of the founding members of this great N-Board used to claim that 80% of all carburator problems was found in the ignition system. Something to think about.

Meanwhile, that still doesn't get you started wit a mis-adjusted carburator. This is what I'd do.

Set both jet adjusts to 1 turn out.

About 1/2 throttle, whiff of eather, and get it running. After warmed up, throttle down to about idle, and adjust idle mixture for max RPM's. Throttle down as slow as you dare and max idle mixture again. Then set idle speed to 400-450 or even 500, what ever makes you confortable. Then max idle mixture again.

Main jet/power jet. usually set under load, like plowing or going up a really steep hill, turn out 1/8 turn at a time until it takes the throttle smoothly. Then check your sparkplugs. Are they black and sootie (too rich), clean an white, (to lean), light tan/grey just about right.

If you turn eather jet more than 2 full turns, you are probably mis-adjusted or got other problems..... ....Dell

I'm not an expert but the float is stuck or it is not operating properly (possibly a hole in the float-shake it and listen). Check float adjustment by laying a 1/4 inch drill bit on gasket and looking for where the edge of the float lays. Adjustment isn't exactly .25 so check your reference manual, I think it was .26.

I had a problem a little back that the tractor wouldn't hardly fire even though it seemed to have good spark. It wasn't getting fuel. I Couldn't get it to turn over fast enough to fire. Had to pull it down the road to start it. After that it started fine again. Carb problem seemed to have caused all this. Problem solved- but your carb has to be operational first.
