Sherman Combo in a 2N question.

Since our '47 2N is split for engine repairs, we decided to pull the step up unit out and put the combo unit in(the step up will end up in our '50 8N when I get around to it.) The question is; does anyone have a 9 or 2N with a combo unit in it?...and does the shifter handle clear the steering arms when pulled out? The hole I will have to drill (the existing step up hole is in a significantly different location well ahead of the steering arm) looks as if the combo shifter will be right under the steering arm, I see that there is enough clearance when it is in, but will it clear when shifted out for the other range? Thanks, Pete

Strongly urge that you look at John Smith's site about Sherman and other transmissions. He has the bible of data for them.

Pete, don't know what the difference is between 9N/2N and the 8N, but the combo handle on my 51 8N does rub the back side of the control arm slightly. I don't think it's doing any damage except to rub off the paint. I think the 2N and 8N transmission cases are the same, but not sure.

Hope this helps,

JA

Thanks John, the cases are the same, slightly different location of the steering arms between the two. If a little paint is all I'll lose, I'm happy! Thanks again, Pete
