Okay, here is my question. Be easy on me I have a limited knowledge of the subject.
I have a 1953 sidemount distributor Ford 8N. It was purchased new by my wifes grandfather and he sold it to me after selling his farm about 4 years ago. I have converted to 12volt system and other than that little else. Now I would love to keep this tractor forever, but I want something with a front loader to move small amounts of dirt, snow, gravel, wood or whatever. Do all 8N's have the capability of adding a loader? If so what would be the weight limits? Are they easy to find? Can you buy new? Any help you have fellas would be greatly appreciated.
On the off chance that I cannot attach a loader to my tractor would you have any suggestions?

Need to dig post holes, bush hog about 5 acres and maybe even use to finish mow about another 3 acres. Along with the loader features. Thanks!

Thanks for the help fellas. Yes it is a 52 sorry for the typo. I may just keep it because of the history and buy a Kubota to boot. Well at least I will try to talk my wife into it lol.

Yes! I see you are aware of the first rule of tractor ownership: "A gentleman farmer has a tractor for every implement!"

Just my 2cents worth... I wanted a front loader for my 52 8N and went for the Paulson Loader. As is, it runs off the tractor hydraulics and has a "trip" bucket. Depending on how you want to use it, the "as is" loader was not good for me. The need to chain down the 3pt lift arms was a pain. I could not control the bucket angle. I could not "Scoop" with the bucket and so on.
So, going new, you can spend a some money ($2500) to convert the Paulson to a real wiz-bang loader or go with the older ones and save some money and work on installing. This conversion required fabricating brackets, welding, cutting and so on. Certainly do-able by the average back yard mechanic. I believe you get what you pay for. The Paulson Loader "as is" may be just fine for your needs ($1475). I like being able to mount the tractor from the side, the 9gmp front mount pump, and the bucket control. I also switched out the lift arm single acting cylinders for dual acting cylinders. Hope this was somehow helpful.

PS - It doesn't look this pretty any more. Now that its done, It works for a living.

Bull, as Dale & Fast Ed suggested, I'd try a rear scoop first & see if that met your needs. I've got a 50N that does all the work around my 10 acres (grass cutting, bush hogging, snow pushing, plowing, etc) and a 51N w/ a Freeman loader. I figure the 51N was purchased to use with a loader, as it has fluid in the tires, wheel weights, a Sherman transmission and oversize (6.00x16) front tires. I only use the 51N for the loader; it is really hard to steer (and stop downhill!) and awkward to drive. But....it does all I want it to do with the bucket. If I really had a lot of bucket work to do, I'd have to get something with power steering and a hydraulic bucket.

bull, instead of a bucket, you could go for a rear scoop. it works of the 3ph. easy to take off and store when you dont need it.

Dearborn (Ford's implement manufacturing name) made loaders for the N series. You can find them around for $200 - $800. There are a couple of models - heavy duty and with a hydraulic bucket or a "trip" bucket. The buckets aren't large by today's standards, but they do fine at around 3 feet. They are relatively easy to mount. If you go looking for one, make sure it is complete, cause you will have trouble finding individual parts like the front mounting bracket. I wouldn't worry about hoses or leaks in the hydraulic cylinders because you can get replacements and rebuild parts.

There are a couple of other manufacturers - Wagner and someone who makes new loaders. The new ones are big bucks.

A couple other things to think about. The Dearborn loaders and most of the other ones make the normal tractor mounting procedure impossible - so ya gotta climb on from the back or over the loader arms. There are a few older "step through" loaders that allow you to mount up normally. Also, while mounting a loader on an 8n isn't hard, it isn't something you want to be doing very often. With the loader, the front steering is fairly hard relative to the 8n without a loader. Also, the tractor is longer by about 3 feet, so its not quite as manueverable.

From what you describe you want to do, it sounds to me like the loader will be acceptable. Also, your tractor is probably a 52 - the last year Ford made 8n's - or it isn't an 8n.

Good luck.

Not much experience with the loader question but I've heard they're hard on the 8n front ends. The rest, bush hog, finish mowing and post hole digging there great at. I use mine on about ten acres and it's just the perfect size. Of course live pto and hydraulics would be nice, but I get by without.

yes you can mount loaders on all 8n's, not sure lifting capacity, or not sure if any one makes loaders still for that old of a tractor but i know around the northeast these loaders are all over the place

Just me talking , I had a front loader on a 601 ford, it was just to hard to steer and akward in tight spots , a rear scupe that works off your 3 pt. might be more to your liking , good luck .
