Dealer sounded straight forward, he took over dealership from his dad, his dad has owned tractor 10 years. No starter, no generator, and I don't know how the 12 volt bat got involed. Mags are a mystery to me. The mag is Fairbanksmorse, I have a mag like it, also a 1942 & 1943 on steel. THANKS. BURT.

If this tractor has been equipped with a generator and starter then you could use any automotive coil of the desired voltage for the ignition. I have rigged many a magnito that had a bad coil in the mag. All you have to do is take the mag wire off the points and instead route a wire from the automotive coil to the points from the Dist. post of the coil and then route the high tension wire from the automotive coil so the high tension voltage can be sent through the rotor to the cap.

Will need an ignition switch too to supply the voltage to the coil. If using 12 volts be sure to either use a coil designed for straight 12 volts or use a ballast resistor to reduce the voltage to the coil or you will have problems burning points etc.

It uses a common mag, points and the coil are not hard to get, our old dealership in Pa stocks the tune up kit and can get the coil, just do not take the drive apart in the middle, remove the cap, mark where the rotor is and remove the mag from the top of the drive.

Hopefully, what Dave said. Here is another magneto parts site that may come in handy.

I assume the dealer is too busy washing his hands of the deal to help with parts but you are just going to have to either dive in or send the whole mag out to be repaired. If'n it were me I wouldn't bet on the mag being easily repaired since I can conceive of no reason to put twelve volts on a tractor with no starter or other electrical device on it. Story just sounds wrong. I would tread carefully and allow hundreds for a totally rebuilt mag if you plan on keeping it original.

Your mileage may vary

Burt, Take the Mechanic out behind the barn and shoot him. He probably toasted the coil in the mag. What make mag does it have? Finding a new coil will be rough but maybe the people in the link below can help.
