i have me a totally rebuilt 9n engine, everything is new from the crank to the spark plugs and wires.plenty of spark to the plugs.all of ignition checks out great.no shorts or lack of fuel to plugs.have pulled front plate and timeing marks line up.have gone over tractor numerous times and all i get is puffs of white smoke out of carb.so,what am i missing?? tractor is in a unheated garage and temperatures here in north east ohio have been cold. is it possable that condensation could of formed in the piston area?i do use a couple of heaters when i work on it.any help would be greatly appreciated. just to recap. i ordered the engine and head was installed and all brand new parts from crank to a set of original spark plug wires and auto lite plugs.12volt conversion with all new wireing hooked up exactly as it was on old engine.plenty of blue spark when i pull plug wire and hold a good quarter of an inch from plug.good spark on end of plug when i ground it.so what is keeping the old girl from fireing up? thanks in advance

If you havent been able to start this engine at all since overhaul I suggest you try to pull start it. When we used to overhaul these regularily we ran into this lots. Engine would fire and disengage the starter for hours , but a pull of a few feet and away she'd go.
If this doesn't work and you want to check your valve timing it can be done by finding TDC on a piston with a wire thru a spark plug hole and watching a set of valves by removing a side plate
Exaust should just close and intake start to open when piston is at TDC,

Roger, it sounds like you've got a timing problem to me too, but I've been having problems with my recently rebuilt 8N starting in this NE Ohio weather too. For some reason the gasoline that I bought last November doesn't want to start in the 8N and makes starting in the Jub and Cub Cadet very difficult. Drained the 8N tank, put in fresh gasoline and she starts and runs just fine.

Roger I sent you a email on how to check timing. Or go to the top of page and type in checking valve timing tip under (search for). I would not remove the head just the valve side covers.

Well, Roger:

It has been my experience that sometimes the "old girls" are that way sometimes. It just requires more PATIENCE the Older she gits!

Hpowever, if you are at your "wits end", keep in touch with the board. There will always be someone who will offer to lend you a hand!

Hope that this will help.

PS: We've all been there at one time or another, I'm sure. :})

Roger, Pull the distributor cap off and take a hold of the rotor. It should have a little free play if you try to turn it back and forth. If it doesn't take the distributor loose and turn 180 degree's and reinstall. It sounds to me like your timing is off 180 or you have the plug wires on wrong. John

The 9n has a front mount distributor
that cannot be installed 180 off without
a really big hammer. Check your spark plug
wire order.

As others have said your cam shaft gear might
be off -- i have heard that they sometimes
are miss marked.

Roger..... ....your description has all the symptoms of incorrect camshaft timing.

Do a compression check on your brand new rebuilt 9N engine. Should be about 125+ psi. If'n compression about 70 psi, that'll confirm incorrect camshaft timing.

Unfortunately, theres been a raft of incorrectly indexed marked camshaft timing gears, and its not just a micrometer kinda thing, its a real visual eazy to spot if'n yer looking fer it kinda thing. Unfortunately, you'll have to remove both your front timing gear cover and your cylinderhead to verify it and correct it..... ...Dell
