HEY GUYS, NOT TRYING TO SOUND DUMB, I AM JUST NEW AT THIS. I HAVE LOOKED AT A COUPLE OF 8N'S AND WHEN I LOOKED UNDER THE TRACTOR I FOUND WHAT LOOKS LIKE COTTER PINS STICKING OUT. THERE IS ONE TOWARD THE FRONT AND ANOTHER TOWARD THE REAR. WHY ARE THEY THERE? ARE THEY NOT SUPPOSE TO BE THERE??

THANKS FOR THE HELP

Some time back I noticed the same arrangement on my 49 fergie. Like an idiot, I cut the pin ends off. Couple weeks later I was told that the hole was what they call a "weeping hole". Reason for it is well covered by most comments below. Now I have to stick a wire up the hole now-And-then, when I remember and a small stream of oil will come out. The cotter pin system was so simple that it seems like something that should be remedied rather than a slick way to keep that compartment free from oil leak build-up. Now I have to figure out how to put another pin in the hole, head first. Any suggestions?

For what it's worth, mine were both clogged with greasy dirt. The one in the front was easy enough ta clean (dipped the block in acid) but the one in the rear, hidden under the Sherman aux tranny is IMPOSSIBLE to get to and clean out. My hands aren't very chubby but fingertips barely reach the bottom of the housing.

While it is open I just squirted a little gasoline in the housing and swished it around as best I could with my fingers. There was enough crud in there that none of it dribbled out. Then, reached around under the tractor and wiggled the cotter pin—out comes the gunk. After several tries I think it's pretty clean down there. Maybe it'll "drip" as designed. Then again, with new tranny input seals and rear main seals, maybe it won't drip at all (hope not ennyhows).

Byron, the 2 cotter keys your talking about, are in the drian holes of the front axle support and the bell housing. They are in there to keep debree from clogging or solidly filling the holes. Other words if you have a front seal or tranny seal leaking the oil will run out around the cotter key. John

The holes are drain holes. They let oil/trans fluid out of the clutch area if the rear engine seal or front transmission seal leak. The compartments with the hole and loose/floppy cotter pin arrangement are supposed to run dry.

The cotter pins are there to keep the holes from plugging with oily dirt, which would be followed by trapping the leaked fluid inside, where it would then splash around and oil your clutch plate.

What you are seeing is exactly how Ford built the tractors originally.

This is an acutal wiggle pin that is in the wobble hole.

It is there for the purpose of preventing the hole from being blocked by greasy buildup. It is there to let the oil etc that may enter the clutch housing drain out on the ground.

I don't know if the EPA has realized that the N tractor actually does drip oil or they would have condemed them by now and had the drip police out to shoot them dead.

THE PINS LOOKS LIKE A 1/4 INCH COTTER PIN WITH THE EYE OF THE PIN INSIDE THE TRACTOR. THE PIN COMES OUT AND BOTH LEGS OF THE PIN ARE BENT IN OUTWARD. ONE PIN IS JUST TO THE REAR OF THE ENGINE THE OTHER IS JUST BEFORE THE REAR END. I HAVE SEEN THIS ON 2 TRACTORS.

Those are "leak makers". If the rear engine oil seal leaks into this area, or the transmission input shaft leaks into the area, these keep the drain hole free of dirt when being shaken by motion or rubbed by weeds etc. Real high tech stuff. grin

Sounds like the pins from a swinging draw bar.
