is it possible for a 1950 8n with a side mount distributor to "jump time"? I realize that it has an internal cam, but is that cam run directly off of the Crank, or is it chain driven?

"MARK" the distributor and rotor position so you can see it before you pull it. If it hasn't jumped time it will make it easier to re-align it as it is a helical type gear. As you put it in it turns.

If it has a fiber gear I have see the fiber part of the gear slip on the hub. The distributor does use a roll pin to retain the drive gear. It could shear. grab the rotor and see if you can spin the dist. shaft. The crank gear uses a key way that could wear allthough That would be the last thing I would suspect. On the dist. gear that would be a side mount type. the front is a direct drive off the cam.

I fixed an 8n for a neighbor a few years ago. He said," I put points and plugs in it and was going across the yard to the garden when all of a sudden it died and the plug wires were all pulled out.' I pulled the distributor, turned it upside down and shook it and handed him the point screw that he had dropped down inside it. I have seen them also strip the teeth off the aluminum cam gear. You can usually tell that because they won't have compression when you hit the starter.
