For those of you who remember a while back when I asked about where/how to mount a 12-volt battery to run a bilge-pump for pumping sap, I thought I would post a pic...Please understand that this pic was taken before I mounted it securely with 2, 1-inch wide nylon ratchet straps and covered the battery posts...This is only a temorary spot for maybe the next month at the most...

third party image

This second pic is of the barrel I use for hauling the sap from my collection points up back...

Supposed to be a good weekend for sap here...High of 35 today, 20's tonight and then maybe 50 tomorrow...For those interested enough to look at some more pics, below is a link to my FTP folder with all the sappin pics from this season so far...

Thanks Again!

Thinking about stick jaw, I remembered I had some maple syrup that got pushed way to the back of the fridge and it turned into rock candy. Had to go get a chunk.

Somebody boiled it a bit too long...I do that for the stuff I am keeping and know won't be around long...

I am about 10 miles south of Burlington, Vermont...No sap today...Supposed to be tomorrow...

Not yet...I need one more stinkin double female coupler for the cords I scrounged...Trying to scrounge up a webcam too...If I can find one, I will link through Yahoo Messenger Webcam, and post my yahoo handle so anyone that cares too can be bored watching boiling sap and steam...

That is a good looking battery spot. If you are finding that the battery you have is not lasting all day you could replace it with an RV deep cycle. They last a little longer with proper charging. Another good battery is the ones that are used in scissor lifts on construction jobs. they are the industrial strength version of the deep cycle, designed to run all day under a load. You should be able to find one at a rental yard that supplys them to contractors. They are spendy but do last for years with proper maintenance

Just my experience, yours may vary

Thanks for the tip!

This batt will be used maybe an hour a day at max, and will be put on a trickle charge at night the days that it is used...

Something that I remember but am no expert on is this. A regular car battery is designed to give you a lot of power for a short time, until the engine starts and then the charging system takes over. A battery that is designed to give sustainable power may be better in the long run. Your sap pump may begin to have to work harder as the voltage coming from the battery begins to drop.

It was just a thought after I had posted the other reply and your experience may still vary

Thanks again!

If I run into trouble, I will go borrow one of Dads' deep cycle boat batts...

The bilge pump is a Rule 1100 and she only draws 5 Amps...We'll see...

Very interesting. Guess I'll have to go fix pancakes, sausage, topped off with maple syrup. Just looking at those pictures and thinking about it made me hungry. thanks
