Please give me your opinion on whats wrong.
I was grading my yard today when my '50 8N made a grinding noise from the engine. I shut the tractor off as soon as I heard the noise. I thought the engine had blown. I checked the oil it was fine. I looked the engine over it seemed fine. So I started the engine back up. the engine sounds as smooth as it always has. BUT now I have no oil pressure none at all. The 8N always held really good oil pressure around 20 lbs before this happened. Do you guys think the oil pump gear broke? Or the oil pump locked up? I only ran the engine a few seconds after I restarted it, but it sounded smooth. Oil pump bad, Gear broke, or do you guys think something more serious in wrong?

Thanks, Rick

I betcha the noise was the oil pickup tube wrapping around or being destroyed by the crankshaft.

Drain oil - look up threw the oil plug - you will see the center of the pickup tube - get a piece of 1/2 plastic tubing - a foot or two-push it over the center of the pick up tube - now leave the ignition switch off - put your finger over the end of the tube - crank over the engine - you should feal a vacuum as soon as the engine srarts to crank over - If you have a vacuum gauge to install over the end of the tube it will work also - you should see about 5" vacuum - If you do not feel a vacuum as soon as the engine gets cranking over you have a oil pump or pick up tube problem - The oil pump has to pick up oil to pump oil - If it takes a wile to get vaccum or no vacuum I would pull the pan and check the oil pump and the pick up tube - If you get a vacuum you will need to look farther up into the engine - the oil pressure relief is the most likley place to check next

Speculation, but you may find the answer by opening up the oil drain plug and looking up into the oil pan. Look for a loose or beat up oil pickup tube. At any rate seems like you likely will have to open the engine up.

Any answer we can give will just be speculation. You will have to go in there and find out.
Good luck and let us know what you find.

I worked on one a few years that this happened on.He had been hearing a tick in the engine, then, he suddenly lost oil pressure. One of the rods was just barely touching the pickup tube, finally, itput a hole in it. At any rate, you will need to drop the pan to find out for sure, at least, to fix it, so, you might as well drop the pan to begin with.
