Rick, I can't think of a good reason to switch. If the original is 'right' it will work fine. Another forum member and I had a conversation just a day or so ago about his stock 6V 9N and how it sits out rain and shine, and how it always starts within a couple of turns, and how the distributor has not been touched in seven or eight years. And my Jub and 8N with stock 6v always start right up. And my 850 with prior 12V conversion, done right, and points always starts within a few spins. ray

If there's no good reason to switch to solid state points, how come none of the cars today have old-fashioned points? How come every single car compnay switched from points to solid state? Probably because they are more reliable, and give a hotter spark.

EPA mandated "anti-smog" rules require minimum MTBF of 50,000 miles between tune-ups. The auto manufacturers were able to do this with technology that was NOT available in 1939.

Infact, if the auto company bean counters had anything to say about it, they would STILL be using points and condensers and carburators instead of computer controlled ignition and fuel injection.

Main reason N-Tractors don't have solidstate ignition is the 12 volt operating requirements, and its subsiquent costs. And the square coil frontmount ignition system is a BASS-TARDIZED design that has no internal room for any solidstate modules..... ....Dell,

A 12 volt advocate for the right reasons, who hasn't found the right reason for his eazy starting 6 volt 52 8N and I know how to do it right, infact I know 7-ways to do it right
