8N's and front loaders

Bought a '52 8n a while back that had a loader on it. The loader was removed before I bought it. A tear-down of the front-end revealed a crack in the axle, and numerous cracks in the axle support. These all had to be welded, and welding a cast-iron axle isn't easy, nor is it cheap. An 8N is a great little tractor, but if you plan on doing heavy work with a loader, a larger tractor designed for a loader might be a better choice.

I can second that front-end loaders are HARD on N front ends. My 8N also had a loader on it in a previous life. The axle pivot bushing was worn all the way through and into the axle to a point about half of its width. All the rod ends, bushings and bearings were in bad shape.

Actually.. sounds like someone just abused your N... 2wd tractors have really robust front solid cast axles. And as size/weight/HP goes.. there are lots of smaller and lighter and weaker tractors using loaders these days.

Think about the hollow gear filled small axle on the front of a small 4wd tractor.. then think again about that large solid cast beam construction of the n's axle...

From an engineering standpoint, the weakes link in that setup would be IMHO the spindles or bearings.
