NOT fixing leak at lower lift arm pins

Just got my first 8N (1951), which is also my first tractor, and I'm making a list of the things that REALLY MUST be fixed before I start mowing 3 acres of cheat grass.

I've got a fluid leak at the right lower lift arm attaching pin in the lower axle housing. This has been discussed a zillion times here, so I've got detailed repair instructions and photos from this board's archives. (Thanks!)

My question: what happens if I DON'T repair this? Is there a safety issue? (The fluid is dripping on the muffler and smoking, but that problem will be eliminated when I install a vertical muffler (which I want for fire safety).)

The pin wobbles about 1/8 inch, and the fluid leak is maybe half a teaspoon a day when the tractor is just sitting in the garage. I'd like to delay this repair as long as possible, since at the moment I don't have even the most basic tools and equipment (not to mention skills). The tractor will be getting light use for mowing and shoving gravel around. How long can I ignore the problem?

Thanks for any advice...

Well, that's pretty much unanimous.

I think I will have to risk a few hours of mowing before I attempt this repair (gotta keep the cheat grass down so it doesn't ignite in the summer -- the hill across the road from us burned up last May, so I'm pretty paranoid). I'll fix it this summer.

Thanks, everyone, for the info and support!

The job must be done, and remember to take the left trumpet off first, then you can get at the right pin without removing the right trumpet..Also you will get a great look at the rear componets and the sludge build up that maybe in the case..Ask all the questions here, and we will be happy to lead you along the way step by step..Ken

Ken..... .On my Jubilee, the left one is leaking. Will I have to remove both trumpet of only the right one? I have the manuals and was a diesel mechanic in the Navy, but that was a long time ago and am hesitant to tear into this..... .thanks..... .E. Ray

Like the other guys said, your may end up with more work if you don't fix her now. All you need for tools is a jack stand, a socket set, some new gaskets and maybe a 1 7/8 open end to get the rear hub off. It'll end up being a bigger project than just repairing the mount....'cause they always are, but you'll learn a lot - gain a little confidence for the next time.

Get your manuals and it'll go pretty easy.

My nickel's worth.

Nothing really will happen unless the pin finally crtystalizes from the "wallerin around", breaks off and drains all of the oil out. Then, too, the "wallerin around" is going to make the hole bigger and make itr more difficult to get the new pin tight in the hole. It's not really that much trouble to repair.

Well, the pin won't rust much.... but the wear is happening in the hole in the trumpet as the cast iron is 'softer' than the pin. I suppose you could end up with a trumpet beyond salvage....and you may wish you attended to it... just a thought... duey
